The product, in the report: Cabinet
I went into my china closet to reach for my crystal glasses on the bottom of the cabinet. While standing in front of the cabinet, the middle shelf came crashing down onto the bottom shelf onto the wood bottom. The noise was so loud my ears were ringing. It frightened me so much I started to shake and could not sleep for two nights. The shelf hit my arm as I pulled it out. If my arm had been further underneath, it could have been caught in there and would have been cut by all the broken crystal. Thirty years ago, when I bought the set, I never took the shelves out to polish behind them because they were too heavy. Now I am in my seventies and living alone. I could never have lifted the shelves to get my hand out and could have bled to death.. Also, you will see by the pictures, if it happened when someone was sitting there during dinner, they would have been sprayed with glass. I found glass chips eight feet from the cabinet. The rug in front of the china closet was covered with all my broken [REDACTED] and broken [REDACTED] china. I had to get all the glass and china up so I could get near the cabinet to take my china off the top shelf and for someone to take the glass shelves out. Also, I could not walk into the room without stepping on glass. Two days later I realized this should never have happened and had someone take the pictures for me. I was not thinking that far in advance to take pictures of the damage. I did not have the shelves piled high with dishes. I had them in the credenza and only had dishes, platters, bowls, cups and saucers, etc. all the show pieces in the china closet. I also lost china heirlooms left to me by my deceased mother. The problem was the back panel was only stapled to the china closet and pulled away causing the heavy glass shelves to fall. I can’t believe Century Furniture, which seemed to be so sturdy and made so well, had a backing put on with staples. (See photograph) There were only 5 small metal holders holding this 3/8” thick glass shelf up which presented a tremendous safety hazard. This dining room set is going to be passed on to my heirs and has to be repaired and made so something like this will never happen again. Either a qualified cabinet maker in the Danbury area should be found or the top portion of the china closet has to be picked up and repaired in the factory. The wood on the bottom has scratches from the broken crystal and china and the glass shelves have nicks also. The holes holding the bottom shelf were damaged, as the middle shelf pushed the bottom shelf down, therefore, when the hooks are put into the hole they don’t stay in tight.. (see photograph). The holes have to be repaired and I believe you need more holes and hooks to carry such heavy glass shelves. The damaged glass shelves have to be replaced and compensation made for my broken crystal and china. This Century furniture was ordered directly from the factory as you can see from the shipping order.
