The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Oct 3, 2012, sent to the company Oct 12, 2012, published by CPSC Oct 26, 2012

The product, in the report: Remote controlled motorized lift. Our living room has raised paneled cherry wood walls. TV is installed in the wall. Product raises and lowers a movable cherry wood panel to blend in with the wall or expose the TV.

Product is A 4000-INV wall panel lift, manufactured by Auton Company in Valencia, Ca. The products function is to lift a movable wood panel thus hiding or exposing a TV behind the movable panel.

The product consist of a remote controlled motor which powers a bar pulley attached to three fabric straps which in turn are attached at the bottom of a 50” X 74 1/2” metal frame. A second metal frame is attached the first metal frame and also the wood panel. Two seven or eight inch metal blocks containing ball bearings are affixed to the wall. One of the frames contains two slides which serves to keep the frames attached to the wall while facilitation an up and down movement. The metal slides in which the ball bearings roll are not continuous but spliced with a weld at the approximate mid-point. At that point the slides are worn which allowed the ball bearing to escape the track.

In the presence of my two year old grandson my wife remotely activated the lift to lower it. When it reached the worn spot in the track, the metal frames and wood panel escaped the track. At this point the top of the panel would still be approximately seven or eight feet in the air. The entire top of the panel flipped 180 degrees, pivoting on the straps attached to the bottom of the panel, crashing to the floor and shattering the panel. At that moment my grandson was less than four feet from being violently hit. I would estimate the weight involved to be in excess of 150 pounds.

Upon contacting the company I was assured that the product was still under warranty until December 2012 but I had to pay shipping to and from the factory and that none of the labor to repair the panel or other damage the product caused would be considered. I informed them the only shipping I was willing to incur was to ship the product to your lab for testing but they are not impressed.

I am an angry man. I’m angry that this could have seriously injured my grandson. I am angry that Auton flaunting their responsibility as defined by the California product liability laws knowing it is not economically wise for me to litigate. I’m angry at myself because I did not report this to you for product recall consideration until I got angry. As evidence of how angry I am I am willing to forgo my warranty claim, (the product alone is $4999) and pay for shipping the product to you if you are interested in pursuing. Also if you are interested I can forward you the e-mail correspondence I have had with the company.
