RE: 5-DeckerShoeRack #70914
To whom this may concern:
My name is [REDACTED] and I live in [REDACTED]. I am 29 years old and I am a mother of four children. My oldest is [REDACTED] (nine), [REDACTED] (8), [REDACTED] (18mo.) and [REDACTED] (five months). To tell you a little about [REDACTED] he is an awesome kid very outgoing and very active. Earlier this year my mother and I bought five shoe racks from the 99cent only store. I am writing you this letter to let you know about a tragedy that happen in our home to my baby on October 12th 2017 at about 7:45pm. This product nearly killed my 18 month old son. One of the polls had fell out of the rack and My 18 month old got a hold of the pole. When I seen him with the metal/plastic poll as I went in to take it from him he slipped on the floor and jammed himself in his mouth to the back of the throat, just a half of an inch away from his esophagus. Picture this, when my son stood up off the floor he was holding his throat and mouth gasping for air while blood came gushing out like a waterfall. He couldn’t breath he was also screaming and crying! Everywhere was blood, blood and more blood. I had never in my life seen so much blood. I’m STILL in shock! I’m even crying as I’m writing this letter. The bleeding just wouldn’t stop! It just kept pouring, and pouring, and pouring out. My baby was chocking and gargling on his own blood even gagging cause the blood was flooding his mouth nearly drowning him. It was even pouring out of his nose. When he had started to faint I thought he was dying! I noticed He even had to come to his own senses and realized he needed to just stop crying cause if he didn’t its was just gonna hurt worse. When I looked inside his mouth the poll cut a whole deep inside the back of his throat near his tonsils. About an inch deep. I remember everything being bright red on his face, on my daughter, on my mother, the floor, on his clothes, on me, the bathroom counter, my hands and even the stairs. I thought he was going to die. I couldn’t even get a hold of myself when I seen this happening. This was like something out of a horror film. I was so scared I ran out the house with him with no shoes on and my daughter and I rushed him to the Doctors hospital of [REDACTED]. That’s when the doctor said he had to have surgery but they had to transfer us to [REDACTED], which is bout an hour and a half away from where we live. This was a total of a four hour transition where my baby had NO meds yet. He was just in pain for four hours! Once we finally got there they finally gave him [REDACTED] for the pain. Even though he had stopped crying every time he looked at me all I seen was fear in his watery eyes. It was like he was talking to me telepathically telling me he was so scared and knew something bad had happened. I had never been soo scared in my life and we still had to go through a whole surgery and healing process. I couldn’t stop thinking about how much blood he had lost. At this point I had just hated the color red and I was praying he didn’t need a blood transfusion. This whole time up until surgery he wouldn’t move a mussel not even swallowing. Only moving his eyes side to side even after he had got the [REDACTED]. He was only drooling, drooling soo much he created a rash in the corner of his mouth because he couldn’t swallow. He was going in and out of sleep. Let me tell you, I was terrified, I didn’t know if would wake up! It was now after 12 midnight and the nurses and doctors were coming in our hospital room where they had to monitor him confirming that [REDACTED] did need surgery to stich up the whole. Remind you, this is my baby only one and half years old. Needed to be put asleep with Anesthesia and have surgery in one of the most scariest spots on the body. I kept thinking how did he even survive this!? The Doctor said to [REDACTED] “you know, you’re a very lucky kid”. He also said that if the pole went all the way through his neck or through the roof of his mouth it would have killed him. I most defiantly agreed. He was blessed in fact. I cried for nearly 72 hours just in fear. On the positive side, [REDACTED] surgery was a success. He went into surgery October 13th, 2017 at 9a and came out at 1p. He was all doped up and I hated seeing my baby look like that, but I just didn’t want him to feel anymore pain. So as long as he was comfortable while sleeping, I was comfortable. He is currently still on his meds, an antibiotic, Oxycodone and Tylenol for pain. I have included some pictures to go with this letter if it helps in any way. The purpose of this letter is I feel there should be some kind of recall on this shoe rack and that we should be compensated for our pain and suffering. My mother lost two days of work behind this incident because she had to watch my other three children while I stayed at the hospital with [REDACTED]. We also all have been driving back and forth between [REDACTED] and [REDACTED]. We bought 5 sets of this rack which I thought was safe around my four children, and clearly its not. The Poll pieces are extremely loose and some of them are too short and they fall out. Please try and feel what I am still feeling and going through. When I looked for this rack online its even being advertised for children with children’s shoes on it. I just hope to save another child from being hurt or even loosing their life. Thank you for taking the time in reading my letter.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]
