The product, in the report: The product is from Amzdeal and is called a Shoe Storage Bench, Kid’s Shoe Bench. The bench is white, has approximately 11 individual rectangular storage/cubbie locations with a seat pad on the top level. The materials appear to be painted particle board and melamine edging (which tested at 150 ppm lead). By the time I took the product from the father, it was already partially broken up, so my office only has part of the product in our possession.
As part of my duties with the [REDACTED] (a recipient of CDC funding), I performed a child lead poisoning case investigation on 12/29/2022 at the child’s home. The father of the case reported that the child was mouthing and licking the edges of a wooden shoe rack. I took the shoe rack to my office and first scanned it with an XRF, which showed results of 0.6-0.7 mg/cm2. I then took a chip from the edge, which is likely melamine, and sent it to an NLLAP-accredited lab. The result was 150 ppm lead. The product was purchased from Amazon on 12/7/2020 and the name is Amzdeal Shoe Storage Bench, Kid’s Shoe Bench. The child is less than one year old and had a venous blood lead level of 11.8 ug/dl.
