  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Feb 3, 2026, sent to the company Feb 6, 2026, published by CPSC Feb 23, 2026

The product, in the report: Tangkula 63” Tall Bathroom Storage Cabinet, Freestanding Narrow Linen Tower with Adjustable Shelf, Modern Slim Floor Cabinet with 2 Doors for Bathroom, Living Room, Kitchen (Black)

The product is a tall, inexpensively made MDF (medium-density fiberboard) shelving unit from the brand ‘Tangkula’ (sold via Amazon). Upon assembly, the unit began emitting extreme levels of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs), specifically a pungent, acrid chemical odor consistent with formaldehyde off-gassing.

The shelf was placed in a small, unventilated bathroom, where the chemical concentration reached levels that made the room uninhabitable. The off-gassing was so severe that the unit had to be moved outdoors to prevent further indoor contamination. Both the seller and Amazon have refused a refund/return resolution despite being notified that the product is a chemical safety hazard that cannot be safely disassembled or repackaged for transit.

Acute exposure to the chemical fumes from this product resulted in immediate physical symptoms, including significant stinging, burning, and excessive tearing, severe scratchy/sore throat, irritation of the upper respiratory tract, and an onset of headaches and dizziness shortly after assembly and exposure in the confined space.

These symptoms are consistent with formaldehyde poisoning/sensitivity and were all present once the shelf was constructed and placed inside. The physical irritation subsided only after the product was removed from the home and the area was ventilated. The product poses an ongoing health risk to any household without professional-grade industrial ventilation.
