A child was crushed to death by a gym teacher at my childen’s School. My now 9-year old son witnessed the horrific death in very close proximity. The [REDACTED] Public Schools temporarily halted the use of all motorized partitions, but then quietly started using them again without ever addressing the glaring and lethal safety issue with parents. The superintendent’s office provided me with a different timeline for their “internal safety review” than was reflected in the superintendent’s email when he lifted the ban (it was presumable completed before this news article about his email on June 1, yet I was told in late July that the inspection was still forthcoming).
The bottom line is that absolutely no changes have been made, no new policies or trains are in place, and the school is trying to act like nothing ever happened. New York changed their safety laws after similar accidents happened there, but [REDACTED]’s response is appalling.
My son is back to attending gym class in the same room as the deadly partition who killed his friend. And the teacher who caused his death was put on a short temporary leave and could be back at any time. It’s amazing that there were no long-term changes made!
