  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Feb 23, 2026, sent to the company Feb 26, 2026, published by CPSC Mar 12, 2026

The product, in the report: This is the Chilipad for a King Size bed. Website is at https://sleep.me/cooling-mattress-topper. It is made by “Sleepme”

Apparently after my wife and I purchased a “Chilipad”, a water based mattress topper you place a sheet over that regulates temperature for both sides of the bed, it had been pushing 15-18 volts through our bodies non-stop while we slept or were in bed. We only noticed something off after we began to both experience similar symptoms of muscle pains, joint pain, brain fog, increased anxiety and increased blood pressure (we both had physicals after symptoms began) and would often wake up in the middle of the night in excruciating arm or neck pain, making it almost impossible to turn over to resettle. Getting out of bed also felt at times just as bad.

We had felt odd sensations when our fingers would touch each other’s skin but only after you slowly dragged the finger-tips along the skin. At first I thought it was dry skin and didn’t think anything of it for months until I returned from a business trip and my wife mentioned she felt it too when stroking along our child’s ear who was laying in bed with her of which our child would hear a ‘buzzing’ sound. Upon hearing this, I immediately got my high-voltage pen checker I use for work and touched the bed they were in. The blankets set off the alarm all over the bed. I knew then there was an abnormal amount of voltage going through the bed. I tested it with a volt meter and found 15-20 volts AC running through the sheets over our skin.

I tested the outlet to ensure the ground was working which it was and that the voltage was correct at 120v which is was. Both Chilipad units (one for each side) were turned off and the voltage was still happening. I unplugged one and no change. I unplugged the other one and the voltage disappeared. Plugging in either Chilipad unit would cause the voltage over the entire bed to return. We have this filmed on video along with me testing the outlet to show the grounding was properly working.

When I had left for my business trip two weeks prior to learning this, my nightly symptoms had subsided after 3 days and my brain fog lifted after 5 days. I still have sore muscles and joints but they are slowly resolving. Some weeks are better than others. My Blood Pressure and my wife’s were unusually high while we underwent normal physicals. Upon disconnecting the bed, both our BP dropped by at least 10 points for both readings and are no longer in the ‘HIGH’ zone.

We feel these units had a design flaw that was causing us considerable harm with mild AC voltage that we were exposed to for months while sleeping and resting in bed. This happened over several months culminating with confirmation of the issue and termination of the use of the Chilipad system on Feb 14th, 2026.
