    The product, in the report: U-shaped Boppy Pillow with multi-colored leaves cover on top of it.

    A two-month-old male was found unresponsive in an adult bed after being put to sleep by his father, on top of a u-shaped nursing pillow. Despite medical intervention, the infant was pronounced deceased at a nearby hospital. This death was reviewed as part of a local child abuse death review team, due to the unsafe sleep environment surrounding this death. The team discussed Decedent’s father’s use of a Boppy pillow to prop Decedent as he slept. Although Decedent’s death was ruled natural, the Team felt that placing Decedent on top of the Boppy pillow possibly complicated Decedent’s illness and may have contributed to his death.

    A 19-day-old infant was found unresponsive in a bassinet, and subsequently pronounced deceased, after being put to sleep on top of a Boppy U-Shaped Pillow. This death was reviewed as part of a local child abuse death review team, due to the unsafe sleep environment surrounding this death. The Team discussed Decedents mother’s use of a Boppy pillow to prop Decedent during sleep, noting that current warnings are insufficient. Findings suggest that Boppy’s marketing on item packaging, specifically the promotion of propping at three months may unintentionally encourage unsafe use. The Team advocates for larger, clearer warnings that replace complex terms like “asphyxia” with simpler language to ensure all adults, regardless of literacy level, understand the fatal risks involved.

    After consideration of the medical history, reported scene investigation, autopsy findings, toxicology report, microbiology testing, and the circumstances surrounding the death, as currently understood, the cause of death is acute bronchopneumonia. The unsafe sleep environment (infant placed to sleep on a Boppy pillow) likely contributed to the demise. The finding of acute bronchopneumonia provides an anatomic cause of death; however, it also increases the infant’s vulnerability to an accidental asphyxial event in the setting of an unsafe sleep environment (i.e. placed to sleep on a Boppy pillow). Leaving an infant unattended or placing them to sleep on a nursing pillow increases the risk of accidental asphyxia because their head may fall in such a way that their airway becomes compressed. As such, the Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued warnings regarding sleeping and these products.1,2 In the setting of a contributing unsafe sleep environment, the manner of death is best classified as accident.

    A well developed, well nourished white infant female appearing to be 5 weeks of age was found unresponsive in her families motel room. Reports explain the family of six was living in a motel room at the time of the decedent’s death. There was on large adult bed which both parents and three surviving children slept in. The mother reported placing the decedent in bassinet with a Boppy pillow inside of it. The mother placed the decedent face up, bottom on the bassinet, with her back propped up against the Boppy pillow reclined at a 45 degree angle. The decedent’s hips down was flat against the mattress of the bassinet. The child was covered with a thick blanket from her toes to her shoulders, with her arms under the blanket. The mother reported waking up to check on the decedent at 23:00 p.m. and 00:00 a.m. she stated on both occasions the decedent had not moved from her oridinal position and the mother stated her chest was moving up and down as she breathed. The mother reported waking up around 07:25 a.m. to check on the decedent and observed her to be completely covered from toes to the hair on her head by the blanket. The mother reported pulling the blanket back and observed the decedent to be bluish in color, feeling cold and stiff to the touch. The mother picked up the child and called for the father to call 911 and began chest compressions and respiration per directions of 911 operator.

    Death was caused by probable positional asphyxia due to unsafe sleep conditions. The infant was placed on a “boppy” pillow (so called nursing pillow), which is considered an unsafe sleep condition. The Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a warning regarding sleeping with these products [REDACTED]. His death likely occurred as result of positional asphyxia that occurred from positioning of the body (hyperflexion of the neck), that interfered with the airway as a result of sliding down on the “boppy” pillow. The livor pattern suggests his head was turned to the right.

Our Forensic Pathologist has determined the use of this pillow was a contributing factor in the infant death. We are aware of other possible deaths from feeding pillows in other cases , that other Coroners have handled as well.

    A 2 month old infant was placed in the boppy pillow in an adult bed with an adult laying next to her. She was found after a couple hours to have rolled over and was face down in the pillow and had suffocated.

    The product, in the report: The report I received said only that it was a Boppy pillow and was used to support baby in recumbent position in crib.

    4 month, 13 day old twin B (fraternal) female found unresponsive next to twin sister A. Baby placed supine in a reclining position, supported by Boppy pillow. 1 hr. later, father found twin A on her side with her face into the Boppy pillow. She had weakness on one side of her body due to scoliosis and was learning to roll supine to prone, but could not roll back to supine. Twins born at 34 weeks. Twin A diagnosed with VACTERL syndrome.
