The product, in the report: Made from metal with a glossy enamel coating. Whistle attached to kettle to signal that water is boiling. It is the shape of a beehive with honeybees on it. The handle and spout lid are made of soft rubber or silicone. Capacity is 2-4 quart. Box is approximately 10 x 7 x7 inches. Note that there is a warning on the box about the very thing that happened, only a little less explicit, and I don’t think that warning is sufficient to allow this product to be on the market. It happened too quickly and unexpectedly, and the finish should not melt like that!
I was using a new whistling teakettle with enamel finish on my gas stove over an open flame. I mistakenly did not close the cover properly so the whistle did not alert me when the water was boiling. It boiled dry. The enamel finish melted and dripped into the open flame. I found the kettle on fire. I have a photo. I managed to put the fire out by dumping a half a large bag of bicarbonate of soda on it, so no one was injured and the only damage was to the teakettle. My landlord replaced my stove burner jets after the incident just in case they were damaged. I have retained the damaged teakettle if anyone needs to see it.
