The product, in the report: The product involved in this incident is a Mr. Coffee Stovetop Kettle, a stainless steel tea kettle designed for boiling water on a stovetop. Below are the specific details: Product Name: Mr. Coffee Stovetop Kettle Brand: Mr. Coffee (Manufactured by Gibson Homewares) Material: Stainless Steel (with plastic components including handle and lid) Color: Silver (with black plastic handle and lid) Size & Dimensions: Approximately 15.00 x 15.00 x 10.00 inches Purchase Location: Walmart (In-store purchase, late 2024) Intended Use: Heating water for tea or other hot beverages This kettle is a commonly used household product, designed to be placed directly on a stovetop burner to heat water. It features a whistling spout that signals when the water reaches a boiling point. The handle and lid are made of plastic, which in this case, caught fire while the kettle was in use.
Consumer Product Safety Report Date of Incident: Approx.. February 10, 2025
On approximately February 10th, 2025, while using a Mr. Coffee Stovetop Kettle (Stainless Steel, Silver, 15.00x15.00x10.00 inches, purchased from Walmart in late 2024), the product caught fire in my kitchen. The plastic components, including the handle and lid, ignited and produced 2-3 foot flames. The fire was extinguished, but the event posed a significant fire hazard and led to exposure to toxic fumes.
Details of the Incident What happened that made you want to report?
The tea kettle unexpectedly caught fire while boiling water, an action for which it was designed. The plastic handle and lid ignited, producing flames 2-3 feet high. The fire posed a serious risk of property damage and personal injury. Toxic fumes from the burning plastic filled my home, causing lingering health effects. What type of product was being used? Mr. Coffee Stovetop Kettle (Stainless Steel, Silver)
Who was using the product? The tea kettle was used by me and my household members for boiling water.
How was the product being used? The kettle was used almost daily before the incident. On the morning of the incident, the kettle was placed on the stovetop with water in it. The kettle was not left alone for an extended period. Flames were noticed when my wife alerted me to the fire in the kitchen.
Were there any injuries that happened or may have happened while using the product? I suffered headaches from exposure to the toxic fumes. The home environment was contaminated with harmful smoke from burning plastic. There was potential risk of severe burns or property damage if the fire had not been quickly controlled.
How did the injuries occur? Toxic fumes from burning plastic filled the house, leading to health effects. Exposure to smoke inhalation caused persistent headaches for about a week.
Manufacturer Response Gibson Homewares, the manufacturer, attributed the incident to improper care, suggesting that the kettle may have boiled dry. They acknowledged my concerns but refused to take responsibility, offering only a replacement kettle. They claimed that no other reports of similar incidents had been received. My request for a formal investigation and accountability was not addressed satisfactorily.
Conclusion & Request for Investigation This incident highlights a severe product safety issue. A stovetop tea kettle should never ignite under normal use, even if water evaporates. This suggests a design flaw or use of flammable materials in critical components.
I request that the CPSC investigate this product for fire hazards and toxicity concerns to prevent future incidents. Consumers should be warned, and the product should be recalled or modified if found unsafe.

Hurt, care not known Made Apr 18, 2019, sent to the company Jul 2, 2019, published by CPSC Jun 27, 2019
The product, in the report: Mr. Coffee French Press coffee maker
To whom it may concern, I have e-mailed Mr. Coffee customer service as well as making phone calls that hardly get answered. Let me get right to the point. On 2/16/19 the handle broke on my Mr. Coffee French Press style coffee maker as I was in a seated position. Consequentially, most of the hot coffee spilled into my lap causing burns and also to my left hand. The main injuries we’re mostly on my inner thigh and caused pain when dressing, walking, etc. I am attaching a copy of the original letter I sent which contained the actual photos that I will attach for you as well. I tried forwarding all the e-mails sent back and forth, if needed I will send them 1 at a time if I have to.
