The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. No one hurt

Made Feb 25, 2023, sent to the company Mar 1, 2023, published by CPSC Mar 15, 2023

The product, in the report: 1 of: Cuisinart CTK-SS17N Aura 2-Quart Teakettle, Make 2-Quarts of Boiling Water in this Classic Tea Kettle, Stainless Steel Sold by: Amazon.com Services LLC

I purchased a Cuisinart brand tea kettle (Cuisinart CTK-SS17N Aura 2-Quart Teakettle) from Amazon on January 3, 2023 (Amazon.com order number: [REDACTED]). I was traveling most of January, and have used the tea kettle relatively few times. Last night (Friday, Fed 25, 2023), I used the kettle to boil water for tea. I was in the kitchen when the kettle whistled and removed it from the burner almost immediately. I put tea bags in the cups and then began to pour the boiled water into the cups. As I was doing so, the metal part of the flap (the part that whistles fell out) fell out of its plastic casing and caused boiling water to go everywhere. When I looked closer, I saw that the plastic in the flap had melted (see uploaded photo). I have asked Amazon for a full refund. They have refused and offered only a partial refund “in keeping” with their policies. It seems like a full refund should be in order in this case, where Amazon sold a product with a hidden and dangerous defect.

I’d like [REDACTED] to talk with Amazon about the need to (1) give their customer service reps some leeway in this type of circumstance (which they seem to lack), and (2) as a policy, give full refunds where a product is shown to have a hidden and dangerous defect. Thank you for raising this with Amazon - I hope its a simple one for a reasonable person with authority at Amazon to resolve. Unfortunately, I was unable to speak to such a person.

    burn hazzard

    2 quart #BA-165A serial #V17550

In order to pour the boiling water one must first remove the tiny whistle cap which is very hot. The stainless steel handle is extremely hot too and can not be touched without a cloth.

On October 15, 2009, I wrote a letter about this hazzard to Cuisinart’s [REDACTED], Supervisor Consumer Services, but never received a response.
