I was making coffee in my carafe (french press) while I was stirring the hot water and coffee granules an area of the glass cracked, broke, and spurted boiling hot water onto my clothing and burned my leg. Fortunately, I jumped back quickly enough to avoid being burned any worse.

The product, in the report: Produced by Bodum (for Starbucks) made in Portugal Design group Lucerne Switzerland registered by Pi-Design Ag, Switzerland
I made coffee for the first time in this Bodium Starbucks coffee press and discovered shards of the metal screen had dislodged into the coffee when I was on my second cup of coffee from the press. I then looked closely at the coiled metal & noticed it was uneven and likely forced the metal screen shards to dislodge - it was the first time I used the coffee press that this happened.

The product, in the report: This is Bodum’s stainless steel 6 cup stovetop espresso maker. I bought it at the bodum store in 2017. We switched to gas range in 2018 and that’s when the handle started melting and catching on fire.
In January 2018, the handle of my Bodum espresso maker caught on fire. I put it out quickly and was angry about the poor design. Today, May 11th, 2019 I finally used it again, despite being careful to keep handle out of the way of our gas stove flames, but it caught on fire again and melted so it is no longer useable.

No one hurt Made Dec 14, 2017, sent to the company Mar 26, 2018, published by CPSC Apr 9, 2018
The product, in the report: Bodum Caffettiera French Press Coffee Maker
The hazard I wish to report concerns the Bodum glass coffee press. The main hazard is that the press, during regular use, is subject to extreme thermal stress when boiling water is poured into it, and in some cases is over stressed and fails.
Also, the glass craft is not secured into the cage, and can fall out while pouring. In both cases, the glass will shatter, leaving small glass slivers and pieces on the counter top, where food is prepared.
The first email attached is Bodums’ response to my initial complaint, as well as my initial complaint. The second email starts off with a more detailed description of the problem including the basis of a stress analysis indicating the over stressed condition.
Also included is a photo of a typical failure, this one due to thermal stress alone. Please note that these products are similar to the product that Bodum previously recalled, the [REDACTED] coffee press, and has a similar defect. Also note that Bodum states that the product is subject to microscopic defects, not visible to the human eye, which could cause failure during normal use. Also note that Bodum does not include any warnings about these dangers on their products.
The first failure occurred when I poured boiling water into the craft. Boiling water, glass splinters, small glass cups, and grinds were spread over the counter top, cabinets, and floor. The entire area had to be wiped with cloths which had to be thrown out due to the glass. Then the area had to be dried, vacuumed, and the wiped again. The glass chips were so small, there is little assurance they were all removed.
Your assistance assistance is greatly appreciated.

The product, in the report: Bodum stainless steel French press coffee maker.
Bodum 28 French Press. The bottom of this pot has a pair of tabs that press into a pair of notches in the bottom of the pot. After a while, this tabs no longer extend into the pot with sufficient force to keep the bottom from falling out and the carafe from sliding down. The lip of the carafe prevents it from falling completely out, but if the lip should break from the force of a full pot of hot coffee will hit the floor. I was lucky that the pot did not break and I avoided the coffee that was spilled.

The product, in the report: Bodum® rose gold Chambord locking lid 8-cup glass coffee presses.
Tea was being brewed in the french press. Once the brewing time has elapsed, I lifted the french press to pour the liquid into a container. That’s when the glass carafe fell through the metal frame of the coffee press. The glass carafe shattered and hot liquid burned my right upper thigh.

The product, in the report: Bodum brand French Press
Product: Bodum French Press, large size - completely broke today while I was making coffee - the crack is a “U” shape that runs from one side of the canister across the bottom, and up the other side, a perfect crack that essentially split the glass in half. The coffee exploded out of the device and onto my leg, penetrating my pajamas and causing instant blistering on my abdomen and upper thigh. VERY dangerous - and potentially permanent scarring had I had a toddler, or anyone else standing near me unprotected in any way. Photos available.

The product, in the report: Bodum® rose gold glass coffee press. Sold at Starbucks. A glass liner (looks like a beaker) with a metal frame that is gold colored and has a plastic bottom.
This product was purchased at Starbucks in Nov 2013. On Tuesday, [REDACT], I was using it in the morning to make my coffee at my desk (home office). I had just filled the press with boiling water when i moved to pour into my coffee cup, across my desk. It was full. As i began to pour, the plastic bottom fell off and the glass sleeve (like a beaker) slid out. The glass beaker fell to my desk, hit the corner and tumbled into my office chair. My chair is all leather (looks more like a piece of living room furniture) and the contents of the beaker immediately poured into the seat, the one i was sitting on. I jumped up as quickly as possible, but i was burned badly on my backside. I jumped into a cold shower (my skin was actually “steaming”) to cool down and sat on ice packs for a couple hours before going to the doctor. The diagnosis was first and second degree burns to my backside (butt and lower back). I received a prescription for burn cream and pain medication to ease the discomfort. It not quite a week, but the burn area remains extremely uncomfortable.

The product, in the report: Bodum rose gold Chambord French Press locking lid 8-cup glass coffee press.
I wanted to write and inform you of a product I purchased at Starbucks. I asked for your rose gold Bodum French press for Xmas and got it, was super excited. The second time I used it after washing and putting it back together, I was walking to my desk and the plastic bottom fell off, the glass fell out! My coffee and HOT WATER went everywhere, including my laptop which is now totally dead. I took my laptop to the [REDACTED] store and they told me because of the coffee grinds and water damage, I would not even be able to recover anything on it.
I am super disappointed in this product performance and want my memories and work back from my laptop.

The product, in the report: Bodum (brand) Tea For One: Glass with tea strainer, double wall Had one orange and one black
Had purchased 2 Bodum Tea For One glasses (double-wall glass with tea strainer). Used for a couple months with no incident. I had always hand-washed them. One time, after finishing my tea, I was handwashing with those plastic soap wands with sponge at the end. As I was turning the glass with one hand and using the soap sponge wand on the inside with the other hand, the outside shattered where I was holding.
I looked down and the outside layer of glass had shattered. I did not use any heavy pressure and did nothing that should have put enough pressure to shatter the glass. I did get a minor cut on my hand - luckily there was not hot tea liquid in the glass when it happened.
I threw out the glass and have not used the other one since. I have sent two messages to Bodum about the incident through their website contact form but never got any response.
When it shattered, I noticed how thin the layers of glass are on the double layer and I can see that it probably could break if you held on too tight while drinking tea which is why I don’t use the other one anymore. The glass is much thinner than the [REDACTED] glass tumblers (which I also owned) that were just recalled.

The product, in the report: Bodum Brazil Green

The product, in the report: VACUUM COFFEE MAKER, HIGH TEMP GLASS. TWO PIECE. ITEM WAS NEW!
This is in regard to a “BODUM” vacuum maker, the model being a “SANTOS” model. This model is currently marketed under the “PEBO” designation. It is a glass model of the metal type of vacuum makers popular during the 30’s, 40’s and 50’s designed for range top use. The top or funnel, as is the lower unit, is made of high temperature glass. The lower unit holds the finished coffee after brewing. The lower unit has a narrow collar in which the upper unit fits. The lower unit has a black plastic handle aroung its filler neck. The owners manual does not have any prohibitions against heating the unit in a microwave oven. It is because of this, I decided to heat clean water in the lower unit for the purpose of cleaning the unit. I filled the lower unit, or carafe, to a water level of 10mm below the filler neck top. I placed the unit in the microwave oven, set the timer for four (4) minutes and observed the water being heated , the purpose being to prevent the water from boilling over the filler neck. As I was watching the unit, I heard a muffled “pop”. I immediately shut of the oven. I thought the glass might have cracked. Using oven mitts, I carefully removed the carafe. There did not to be any indication of the glass being damaged! Removing the carafe, I did notice a stream of hardened plastic coming from a small hole, approx. 5mm, dia. in the handles plastic collar , located along the horizontal line of the handle collar. The hole did not appear to go all the way thru the collar. There two things that could caused this to happen. 1. The collar had an implanted RFID chip. (not likely though) 2. A small piece of a metal substance contaminated the plastic “shot” during molding. I am concerned about the integrity of the handle as hot liquids are involved. If it will be of assistance to you, I can remit images of the unit.
