How badly anyone was hurt

  • No one hurt 2 CPSC: Incident, No Injury

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

The product, in the report: Vekkia 3000K Warm LED Rechargeable Book Light

The Vekkia 3000K Warm LED Rechargeable Book Light overheated and ignited on my desk while charging and started a fire in my office. Luckily the rest of my house was saved because my door was closed but I have smoke damage on everything in my office and several items destroyed nearby the fire.

The product, in the report: Vekkia B076SVC7SN LuminoLite Rechargeable 3000K Warm 6 LED Book, Easy Clip Lights Bed. 3 Brightness Eye-Care, 2.1 oz Lightweight, 20 Hours Reading That I had used it for a few years. Regardless of how long, it should not puff a LIPO pack that is weird! This product you wont find on Amazon any more but I have the product order page I can refer to.

I have been experiencing repeated issues with the typical Amazon China import product, a clip on book-light that is showing odd charging behavior for what is probably a Lipo (or similar chemistry) battery. I had a previous version dim over time and wouldn’t hold a charge, until one day I noticed the case swelling, cracking open, and I dug into it to see what was happening and - woah! the Lithium-Polymer battery had swelled so much it was breaking the case open (I threw the battery out but I kept the actual lamp itself I kept it for possible junk parts use). I was shocked but just tossed the device, thinking I just happened to get a lemon. But now the newer (similar design) I bought more recently on Amazon is displaying similar weird behavior as regards the charging circuitry. It could be they are not properly charging but the issue isn’t apparent at first? Anyway, I am abandoning the use of this newer one now. I think they become dangerous if a person really uses it daily. I used it with a [REDACTED] typewriter, it helps my 70-year-old eyes see the screen a little better. But now with these lights from China with strange battery charging behavior--yipes--you do NOT want a lithium fire in the home for sure. Thanks for your help.
