No incident, no one hurt Made Jan 29, 2013, sent to the company Feb 15, 2013, published by CPSC Mar 4, 2013
The product, in the report: T5 Fluorescent fixture , 22 7/8” long, UPC 5528400408
Concern is over a T5 fluorescent light fixture distributed by Good Earth Lighting, Inc., 5260 Capitol Drive, Wheeling, Illinois, 60090. It has the UPC 5528400408, and is sold by Menards. It is 110 Volts and designed for under-cabinet use. It is often used under kitchen cabinets and thus may be near a sink, an electrical ground. Internally, the fixture has ground (green) wires so the fixtures may be chained by a 3 wire cord. However, the wall plug for the fixture is only a 2 prong plug so the green wires in the fixture are useless as a safety ground.
If, instead of being plugged into a wall socket, the fixture is hard wired, the body of the fixture will be properly grounded by the removable part of the fixture that contains the electrical parts is not grounded to the body of the fixture.
If a short circuit develops in this fixture, an unreasonable risk of electrocution is presented, particularly for someone in a kitchen using the under-cabinet fixture near a sink.
