The product, in the report: Monument® Combo Lighting (Exit Sign with Emergency Lighting) Model No. 673066. The unit uses a nickle-cadmium 4.8V 1Ah battery. The sign is approximately 12” x 10”.
On two occasions in the last 6-8 months, a Monument® Combo Lighting (Exit Sign with Emergency Lighting) Model No. 673066 has caught on fire in an un-sprinklered School administration building. Most recently, this occurred at 04:30 on October 20, 2017. The fire was contained to the unit, but did spread smoke throughout the lower portion of the effected structure.
In both cases, the fire alarm system detected the problem and activated – possibly since a detector was within two feet of the malfunctioning unit.
The 110-volt power supply to the unit does not appear to be a contributing factor to the equipment failure.
