Hurt, no treatment Made Dec 17, 2017, sent to the company Jan 2, 2018, published by CPSC Jan 17, 2018
The product, in the report: Holiday Home battery candle lamp indoor use only Brass plated candle base Uses 2 AA batteries (not included) Uses 3 volt replacement bulb Item # ES60-990 Distributed by Inter-American Products Cincinnati, OH 45202 Made in China
I was testing battery operated candles that I purchased to use during the Christmas season. The two candles were branded as:
Holiday Home battery candle lamp indoor use only
Brass plated candle base
Uses 2 AA batteries (not included) Uses 3 volt replacement bulb
Item # ES60-990
Distributed by Inter-American Products Cincinnati, OH 45202
Made in China
The first candle did not light so I assembled the second candle. After correctly inserting 2 AA batteries, I screwed in the light bulb. This candle did not light so I set it aside while I removed the light bulb from the first candle so I could trade it for the bulb on the second candle and see if it was a problem with a defective bulb on the second candle. When I picked up the second candle the white plastic “candle” burned my hand. I removed the batteries as quickly as possible and burned my other hand when the batteries dropped into it. I dropped the batteries and the burned my thigh through my slacks. Now, more than 20 minutes later, those batteries are still too hot to handle comfortably. All four of the batteries that I used in these candles were new, never used [REDACTED] batteries. My burns are a matter of reddened skin and discomfort, not blisters and damage below the skin BUT if one of my grandchildren had handled that candle, they could have been hurt more seriously and I hate to contemplate the damage that could have been done if I had left that candle on my table and left my apartment or gone to bed.
I am not going to risk further damage or harm by putting another pair of fresh batteries in that candle. Nor am I going to purchase replacement bulbs to do any further testing. The batteries that were so hot will be disposed of when they have cooled enough to be handled.
