The product, in the report: Battery operated LED candle light. The desription on the packaging says “Fabulous Home Holiday Battery Operated 8.5in Candle Light”. The back of the packaging says “Distributed by Far East Brokers and Consultants, Inc. Jacksonville, Florida 32207”. The item # is 30720-05. UPC is 0-1154629029-9.
Bought several of these battery operated LED candle lights and inserted the two AA batteries into each one. After a couple of minutes I heard a sizzling sound coming from one of the lights. Fearing that it may burst into flames I tried to pick it up to move it outside but it was too hot to hold. I scooped it up into a frying pan and brought it outside. I pretty much knew there must have a short circuit so I wanted to get the batteries out ASAP. Using oven mits I unscrewed the top and shook the batteries out. The very hot batteries (both of them) continued to sizzle and ooze liquid until they cooled down after several minutes. The plastic body of the light was visibly burnt - especially at the bottom.
It appeared to me that the metal tab at the top, which was supposed to connect with the light bulb, must have contacted the positive battery terminal instead - causing the short circuit. However, it is difficult to tell for sure since I had a touch time shaking the batteries out of that end of the unit. I was trying to disassemble it quickly and did not take note of the position of the metal tab and how it short circuited.
I was not injured and there was no property damage. My main concern is to not have this happen to anyone else as I truly believe that this came very close to causing a fire in my house. I still have the unit, the batteries and packaging.
