The product, in the report: Commercial Electric brand Selectable White Tape Light 40 inch Model # LR433-5WX7PIR2-G1-1024
Im reporting a product that needs to be recalled for fire safety hazard: Commercial Electric brand Selectable White Tape Light 40 inch Model # LR433-5WX7PIR2-G1-1024, (purchased from the Home Depot in Arlington, VA on 11/ 28/25) On Tuesday 12/2/25 I plugged in the USB charging cable to charge the rechargeable controller. After a few hours, the red charging light indicator turned green, so I unplugged it from the outlet and connected the tape light to the controller. I began pressing the On/Off switch and toggling between the lighting mode and brightness options. I held the tape against the wall of my kids closets to determine what position to mount it. After a few minutes, I turned it off and a few seconds later, turned it back on again, but the lights wouldnt come on. I didnt think it could lose charge so quickly, so I plugged the controller back into the charger and saw the red indicator light came on again. I noticed the controller surface was very hot to the touch. I immediately unplugged it and noticed a bubble forming on the plastic front cover. I ran to put the hot melting controller into our stainless steel kitchen sink and watched it continue to melt a hole into the controller as it began smoldering with a steady stream of smoke and a putrid electrical smell. I took photos and videos, then wore an oven mitt to carry the device outside onto the driveway for fear that it would spark and explode in the house. It smoldered for about 30 minutes longer. This product MUST be recalled and consumers notified of this serious fire hazard. If I had installed this in my kids closets, the clothing wouldve certainly caught fire and burned our house. It was a very scary experience and I will never purchase another product from Commercial Electric again. I plan to return the faulty product and the additional ones I bought, back to the Home Depot for refund and will let them know I filed a report with CPSC, but want to hold onto the burnt unit for whomever might need it for further investigative purposes. I will notify the Commercial Electric manufacturer about this too. Please let me know what will be done about this.
