  1. First aid

Made Jul 22, 2019, sent to the company Jul 31, 2019, published by CPSC Aug 14, 2019

The product, in the report: Basco Shower Doors Part Number SP4500 Clear Door, Oil Rubbed Bronze Size Range for shower opening: 43” to 47” Two sliding doors provided for opening

I ordered Basco Shower Doors, frameless, from Tile-Redi in March 2019 for a bathroom/shower I was building in my house. By June 18, 2019 I had the shower complete and the frame installed for the doors. I removed the door from the box and proceeded to lift the door into the track. The doors did not require any prep to be done as the hanger brackets are factory installed. While holding the door it exploded in my hands sending glass shards everywhere. The door literally exploded into thousands of pieces, scratching the surrounding metal frame. I received cuts on my wrists and hands but did not require medical attention. The door had not been dropped or otherwise damaged in any way. I immediately called Tile-Redi and provided information but they could not put me in touch with someone immediately to rectify the problem, so I called Basco Shower Doors directly. They told me the doors were warranted and agreed to ship out two doors as I was concerned that neither of the two doors they originally shipped me had the proper temper done to the glass. On July 1, 2019 I received the new shipment of doors, and gingerly installed the first door. The second door, again lifting it into the frame, exploded in my hands, causing small cuts and embedded shards of glass in my arm. I required first aid but not medical attention. This door reacted identically as the first shipment. I contacted Basco Shower Doors again and they agreed to send me another set of doors. At this point I have two of their shower doors installed but am extremely wary of their safety and quality. Neither door was hit, twisted or jammed, each exploded with a great deal of energy with just minor handling, lifting them gently into the frame. There is something very wrong with these doors, either the temper is not correct or the hangers, installed at the factory, are creating pressure or damage to the glass causing them to be bombs waiting to go off. I will not purchase Basco Doors again and if these doors shatter I will take my loss and have them locally made. I am considering removing these doors and having framed doors made as I am concerned with another explosion occurring while using the shower. Having a heavy glass door explode in your hands is a jarring experience. The glass does not just break, it blows apart hitting everything surrounding it, including the person holding it.
