The product, in the report: From Chilton Furniture, Scarborough, Maine: Saddle Seat Stools -These distinctive stools are extremely comfortable. The cut-out finger openings make them easy to handle, and the metal swivel allows for easy movement. Available in 24-inch and 30-inch heights. $169.00 - $179.00 Item Size Color Price 24” Cherry Saddle Seat Stool 22w x 13d x 24h SKU: 5-812/24 natural $169.00
Three to four years ago I purchased three 24” cherry saddle seat stools from Chilton Furniture in Scarborough, Maine. These stools are located under my breakfast bar in my kitchen. In February, my 60 year old sister was visting and she sat on one of the stools. The stool failed catastrophically and she hit her head on my granite countertop as she fell to the floor. Luckily, she was not injured, but was shaken by the incident. The saddle stools are designed to pivot. When I purchased them I was concerned about the strength of the saddle seats, but I was told they had only experienced a few saddles splitting when very heavy people sat in them. Nothing like this catastrophic failure, with the saddle completely coming detached from the bottom of the stool was described to me as a possible failure. I contacted the manufacturer, who admitted they have seen “a few” of these failures and they have changed their design to incorporate longer screws from the pivot plate to the bottom of the saddle seat. I still have all of the components of the failed seat if you would like to investigate this issue.
