  1. No one hurt

Made Jun 2, 2011, published by CPSC Jun 30, 2011

The product, in the report: Whitley Oval two-person adjustable chaise lounge, black/brown woven plastic over a steel frame, with red upholstery. Two attached end tables and an attached steel-frame umbrella with red fabric.

My husband, daughter, and I were standing on our deck next to our Whitley Oval Chaise lounge, purchased at Sam’s Club and sold under the La-Z-Boy brand. There was a light breeze blowing, and we had the umbrella up for shade. Suddenly and without warning, the umbrella buckled and fell over, nearly striking us. The steel pole bent completely in half, and the top of the umbrella struck the ground in an instant. This is a heavy steel frame umbrella, and could easily have injured or even killed one of us had we been closer. I immediately contacted Sam’s Club, La-Z-Boy, and BJI (the patio furniture subcontractor for La-Z-Boy), provided photos of the damage, and have not received a response. There is no visible wear or rust in the bent area - it appears to be strictly a poor design that placed too much stress on one point in the pole.
