She stated that it has become so hard it feels like she is sleeping on cement, her entire body aches from the hardness of it. She contacted the company but they advised her that there was nothing wrong with mattress it adjusts to body temperature.

Caller stated that there is a blank label on the mattress which she believes is against the federal law. She stated that she is unaware of contents that the mattress was made with. Caller feels that the company should be held liable for providing a blank label on the mattress and not willing to assist in the failure of it.

The product, in the report: Tempur-Pedic mattress and adjustable frame .

On 04/06/2015 a Tempur-Pedic mattress and adjustable frame was purchased to help ease chronic back pain since a failed back surgery . The mattress was taken home first - had to wait until 04/15/2015 before the adjustable frame could be delivered . I slept on the mattress before receiving the frame and there wasn’t any odor of any sort . After the frame was delivered , the plastic wrap removed and set-up with the mattress on it , we could immediately start to smell a strong chemical odor permeating the whole house . Thinking it just needed to air out for a couple of days , we opened a few windows just a little bit . After sleeping on the bed the first night , I woke up with my throat almost swollen shut , the back of my tongue was swollen and irritated , my eyes were burning and was having some issues breathing . I have respiratory problems anyway and in my opinion some type of warning should be given by Tempur-Pedic about these odors - this way a potential customer could be aware of the potential health risk involved by purchasing these mattresses and adjustable bed frames . If I would have known that the frame was going to emit such a strong chemical odor , we would have never made the purchase . I have made several calls to the salesman at Mattress Firm in Knoxville , Tn. that sold us this set and he says he is trying to help us but , it’s been almost a full 30 days and nothing is getting done . I have asked for a replacement frame early on in this process and , nothing . All Tempur-Pedic wanted to do was , send a T.V. repairman out here to replace some parts on the motor . I told the lady from customer service that it wasn’t the motor causing the chemical odor . She said maybe it was the mattress , that’s when I told her we had the mattress before getting the frame and it was after getting the frame is when the odor started . She advised me , she would talk to Mattress Firm - haven’t heard from Tempur-Pedic since . I kept telling the salesman that we wanted this stuff out of the house , we are tired of having the bedroom closed up with a towel at the bottom of the door to keep the odor from spreading throughout the whole house . I haven’t slept on this set since the first night . It almost sent me to the emergency room once , I won’t give it a second chance . I have to put my shirt over my face to be able to enter the room to get clothes out . We are at the point now , where we want a refund and they need to get this stuff out of this house or I’m going to put it the yard - I’M TIRED OF BREATHING THIS CRAP !!!!! THIS IS A SERIOUS HEALTH ISSUE !!!!!

The product, in the report: Tempur-Pedic contour select mattress

We ordered a new Tempur-Pedic Contour select mattress directly from the company and it was delivered at 5:10 pm on 9/14/2012 by a contractor chosen by the company. The bed was removed from a large cardboard box by the delivery personnel and set in place in the upstairs master bedroom. When they removed the protective plastic a strong chemical odor was immediately noticeable. Shortly after the delivery we left the house for dinner and returned at approximately 7:15 pm. Upon opening the front door we were struck by the intensity of the chemical odor/vapor. I would compare the odor to a petroleum based paint or chemical solvent. We were surprised that it had permeated throughout the entire house so quickly and at how powerful the odor was downstairs. I immediately consulted the Tempur-Pedic internet site to see if this was “normal” and read the following: “Some people notice a slight odor to their new mattress—this can come from our TEMPUR material manufacturing process. This smell is normal and usually disappears before the product reaches you. Sometimes, however, this smell may still be noticeable. It usually disappears after a few weeks. It can help to take the steps recommended in “Break in period“ below; that will help the TEMPUR material cells fully open and release the smell.” And it added: “You can speed up the break-in period by simply spending time in bed: reading, watching TV or playing with the kids or grandkids. The extra movement will help the cells in the TEMPUR material to fully open (some may have remained closed after manufacturing). As they open, they are able to “breath“ and respond to weight and temperature, but they always return to their original shape.” As I was reading this my wife, who is 4 months pregnant and 2 year old son were up stairs. When I went upstairs I was shocked at how strong the odor/vapor was. My wife was complaining of a headache within 15 minutes of being upstairs and is not prone to headaches. I immediately opened all four windows in the bedroom and the window in the attached bathroom and turned on the fan and air conditioner in an effort to dissipate the odor/vapor. The ventilation did little to impact the strong nature of the odor. I decided to try, as the company suggested, to lie on the bed and move around in an effort to speed up the release of the odor/vapor. As I was lying and rolling around in the bed the odor/vapor was extremely noxious and I notices that my eyes were starting to burn. After about 15 minutes I began experiencing an irritation in my throat and an upper respiratory discomfort. I do not have any know allergies and am not easily irritated or oversensitive to odors. It was at his time I concluded that it would not be safe for my pregnant wife and I to sleep on this bed as it was releasing this chemical odor/vapor. I informed my wife that I felt it would be a good idea to sleep in the guest room and let the bedroom air out overnight with the windows open. She agreed and stated that the chemical odor/vapor was very strong throughout whole upstairs, which is where all three bedrooms are located, and could not imagine sleeping in our bedroom on the mattress. Around 9 pm I went to the grocery store to purchase baking soda in the hope that it might absorb some of the odor. I also purchased moisture absorbent to control moisture in the room since the windows would need to remain open overnight for ventilation. As I returned home and exited my vehicle I detected the odor from the driveway. This is a testament to the strength and noxious nature of the odor/vapor.The smell was clearly present in the driveway and the only open windows were on the second story facing the rear of the house. I returned to the room to place the baking soda and moisture absorbent inside, upon opening the door I noticed the smell had grown even more intense. As I changed into my sleep wear which was inside the room, my eyes again began to sting and I felt the irritation in my throat return. I closed the door and placed a towel against the gap between the door and the floor to prevent the odor from seeping out. When I opened the door to our guest room my wife was still awake and my son was in the room with her. She explained that he had woken up coughing and was rubbing his eyes so she took him into the guest room since it was slightly further from the master bedroom. She was complaining of a headache and was unable to fall asleep with the odor present. I got into bed and noticed the odor was clearly present in the guest room. After some time I too was unable to sleep and went downstairs to do some further research of the topic on the internet. After searching “Tempur-Pedic odor” and similar phrases I saw how common this issue is and read many testimonials and reviews by consumers who echoed the same problems and concerns that I was experiencing. Some testimonials stated that they were unable to sleep on the bed for weeks after purchasing and that the odor never really cleared to an undetectable level. I also came across incident reports submitted to safeproducts.gov that mentioned the chemical odor and similar ill effects it caused. I still smelled these odors and after a quick walk around the house it was evident the odor/vapor had permeated the entire home. I went back to bed worried and a bit shocked. I found it difficult to sleep and when I awoke periodically I could feel irritation in my throat and was always conscious of the odor/vapor. I could also hear my son coughing throughout the night. When I awoke in the morning my throat was irritated and I and I could notice a different tone to my voice. My wife stated that was also experiencing throat irritation and was visibly upset about the situation and possible effects this may have on the child she was carrying. I instructed her not to enter the room unless it was absolutely necessary and I left the windows open and the fan on and left for work. Shortly after 8 am I called Tempur-Pedic customer service and spoke with representative [redacted]. I explained the seriousness of the situation and the effects that the odor/vapor had caused. He stated that it was “normal” and that some people might notice a “slight odor” and he assured me that it was “safe and harmless”. I took exception this and explained that I did not understand how such a noxious chemical odor/vapor could be referred to as “slight”. I compared it to having an open can of petroleum based paint or gasoline in the house and said it would be nearly impossible not to experience this offensive odor/vapor. I also mentioned that this was far from an isolated incident based on testimonials and reviews, some of which appear on the Tempur-Pedic site. I asked him how long the odor may persist and he stated as I had seen on the Tempur-Pedic site “It usually disappears after a few weeks”. I immediately knew that I could not subject my family to this for weeks. I made the decision that for safety reasons I would exercise my right to return the product within 90 days for a refund as the company promises. I informed [redacted] of my decision and asked that he schedule a return pick up as soon as possible. He stated that I would need to talk to the returns department which was not open on the weekends and that I would need to call on Monday. I was concerned about my continued exposure to this horrendous chemical odor/vapor, and asked if he had any data or studies that show that the product and the odor/vapors it produced are in fact safe. He stated he did not. I asked if he could provide any information regarding the ingredients or materials used in the manufacturing process or any disclosures required by regulatory agencies he said he did have something and that he would send it to me via e-mail. I asked him to please make a notation on my account information about my report of the odor/vapor and he obliged. I phoned with my wife around noon and asked If the odor had decreased in intensity. She said that it had gotten progressively worse, that she was still experiencing headache, and that upon entering the room to retrieve clothing it was basically unbearable. After hearing this I advised that she open all the windows in the house and to try an outdoor activity or spend time away from the home. During downtime at work I reviewed the e-mail. The e-mail contained several statements that attempted to reassure that there was no danger. It stated “Based on the information that we have reviewed and studies that have been conducted, we have no reason to believe any Tempur-Pedic® product creates a substantive product hazard to consumers.”, but provided no data, links to these studies or information and does not say that it is completely safe or non-toxic. It also states: “Tempur-Pedic® product formulas are a trade secret; however, the raw materials and processes used in manufacturing Tempur-Pedic® products are similar to those used in the production of a large variety of polyurethane foams used everyday by millions of people in many different applications like furniture, bedding, carpet underlay, packaging and automotive seats.” , but does not mention any of the “common” raw ingredients that are used in manufacturing. After further searching on studies I came across the following article on the internet http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Memory_foam . The article cites all sources and makes the following statement: “The HAP [Hazardous Air Pollutants] emissions associated with polyurethane foam production include methylene chloride, toluene diisocyanate, methyl chloroform, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, propylene oxide, diethanolamine, methyl ethyl ketone, methanol, and toluene however not all chemical emissions associated with the production of these material have been classified. Methylene chloride makes up over 98 percent of the total HAP emissions from this industry. Short-term exposure to high concentrations of methylene chloride also irritates the nose and throat. The effects of chronic (long-term) exposure to methylene chloride in humans involve the central nervous system, and include headaches, dizziness, nausea, and memory loss. Animal studies indicate that inhalation of methylene chloride affects the liver, kidney, and cardiovascular system. Developmental or reproductive effects of methylene chloride have not been reported in humans, but limited animal studies have reported lowered fetal body weights in rats exposed. [10]” In another internet article, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tempur-Pedic the point is made that “Traditional (not Tempur) memory foams emit as much as 61 volatile organic compounds (VOCs),[17] several of which are commonly recognized as harmful by the California Health and Welfare Agency, the International Agency on Research of Cancer, and the EPA.[18” the sources cited here are Toxic Bedrooms: Your Guide to a Safe Night’s Sleep by Walter Bader and Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) US Environmental Protection Agency. While this study does not include Tempur-Pedic products Since Tempur-Pedic did state in their e-mail “raw materials and processes used in manufacturing Tempur-Pedic® products are similar to those used in the production of a large variety of polyurethane foams” and that “The difference between the manufacture of our proprietary TEMPUR® material and other foam products is a proprietary process resulting in the viscoelastic property unique to our product and a denser, more comfortable material.” Based on this I would assume that Tempur-Pedic products most likely contain emit those same compounds and may have additional chemical emissions due to their unique manufacturing process. I also concluded if their product was unique and that Tempur-Pedic was concerned with the safety and confidence of consumers they would release and promote data or studies that showed their product did not produce these hazardous air pollutants. After returning home the odor/vapor was indeed much more intense. In an effort to try to curtail the odor, I took the advice of one testimonial/review that advised removing the outer cover and washing it. I washed the removable cover per the manufacturer’s instructions included with the bed and allowed it to air dry. However, with the cover removed the odor/vapor became even stronger and I began to experience headache and nausea and was forced to leave the windows open and leave the room. I took the family out to dinner and the mall in an effort to stay out of the house. I noticed that after a few hours of being away from the house the headache, nausea, and throat and respiratory irritation were not present. The fact that they returned about an hour after being home and that all of us were experiencing similar effects, is a good indicator that it was actually the vapor and not just a mere coincidence. Again we were forced to seal ourselves inside the guestroom to minimize our exposure to the odor/vapor. After another unpleasant night I awoke, my wife complained about the same throat irritation. I went to the bedroom hoping to find that the odor would have finally started to dissipate, instead I found the odor more established despite having the windows open and fan on high speed all night. By noon the cover had dried and I ventured into the room to replace it. By the time I got it on my eyes were burning and I knew I had to get this mattress out of the living space. I took the family out to the store to get them away from the house. I purchased thick plastic drop cloths and upon returning home sent my wife and son to her father’s house to keep them away from the odor. I placed the plastic around the mattress and sealed it with tape. I then moved the mattress into the garage. I then opened every window in the house, turned on every fan and the air conditioning. I called my wife to let her know that she could return. Upon return she noticed that the odor/vapor, while still detectable was a big improvement form that morning. I left the windows open overnight to allow it to air out. At the time of writing on the morning of 9/18 the odor is still present in the bedroom but is not nearly as potent. The rest of the house is much better. Upon entering the garage, the odor is clearly present, despite being wrapped in plastic and sealed with tape. I will call Tempur-Pedic shortly and arrange for the return. I am very eager to get this product out of my home and try to put this whole incident behind me. I feel that Tempur-Pedic needs to inform customers about the odor and possible health risk. The headache, nausea, and throat and respiratory irritation we experienced were directly related to their product. A direct warning should be issued to consumers a not just mere mention on their web site that “Some people notice a slight odor to their new mattress”. This is truly misleading. I was pleased by the level of comfort of the product when I tried it at a local store, and was disappointed that I was unable to ever sleep on the mattress due to the extremely noxious odor. Had I been informed of the potential of experiencing this issue and the health risks associated, I would have never purchased it. This is why I’m sure it is not disclosed, as it would almost certainly discourage sales. As a healthcare professional with an extensive background in chemistry, I do not understand how warnings regarding this issue are not required as part of the product labeling. I couldn’t imagine this product being delivered to someone who’s medical condition would make them more susceptible to the symptoms of inhaling this odor/vapor. I am thankful I was able to remove it from my immediate living space and could not imagine keeping something this noxious in the house for weeks waiting for the odor/vapor issue to resolve. I have tried to be accurate provide as much detail as possible. I hope that it can be used to prevent others from having similar experiences, especially without proper warning. I have provided my contact information and welcome any further questions you have. I also wish to be contacted by the manufacturer and provided with any and all of the information pertaining to the chemical components and any research which has been done regarding safety and chemical emissions.

The product, in the report: Tempur-Pedic Cloud Mattress

Purchased a Tempur Pedic Cloud Mattress. I let the mattress “off gas” for a couple days before sleeping on it as the fumes were so strong. After sleeping on it for one night, I woke up suffering from severe vertigo. I immediately searched the web to see if others were experiencing simular issues and was shocked to see this product is still on the market. So many people have complained about neurological issues, I can not understand how this company is allowed to continue selling these beds with such extreme chemical reactions in humans. I called the store to have them return the mattress and was told the 90 free trial would cost me $300 in return fees and possibly more in re stocking fees. I also went to see my doctor since the vertigo has not gone away. I was told it could be a month or more before I start feeling normal. If anyone decides on join a class action lawsuit, please contact me because I feel as if the fogginess and vertigo I have suffered from this product is impacting life. How are the government wouldn’t make this company disclose the chemicals and post a warning on this bed is insane.

After 4 years of sleeping on a very comfortable tempur-pedic bed, I flipped bed to move it and found massive amounts of mold on the bottom on the bed. I was never told the bed could not be on a platform type frame, which we have. I live in a very dry area at an elevation on 9,000 ft. we don’t have a mold problems here, so why was my bed moldy on the bottom? I have contacted the company and they are refusing to do anything about this issue.
