Hurt, no treatment Made Feb 6, 2020, sent to the company Feb 14, 2020, published by CPSC Mar 9, 2020
The product, in the report: Nova Form - Foam Mattress (like [REDACTED])
Details: Purchase of 12” Novafoam dense foam based mattress with 3” topper and included soft cover Set up on platform based bed rail What went wrong: The mattress and topper do not come with a totally waterproof type slip into bag cover to cover mattress and topper. If the mattress or topper accidently receive liquid spills on them in any depth going into the foam mattress topper or mattress itself, or if it is body fluids from accidents or intimate relations, there is no way to retrieve it out of the mattress materials. It cannot be cleaned out enough and the use of a shop vac - wet/dry is not viable to be able to suck out the liquids. These types of mattresses to the best of my ability have not been treated with any antimicrobial agents to keep the mattresses from developing molds or souring of the materials. When this occurs, there is no choice except to cut up and dispose of the mattress and topper and disinfect the bed railing. Spray on disinfectants do not work either - some cannot be used on the type of foam component the bed is designed from and cause other issues such as degrading of foam materials. I am asking investigation into the use of any and all foam based mattresses that they redesign them with antimicrobial material and provide a waterproof mattress “sack” to go over both the mattress and topper and zipper closed. I might add this situation is less of an issue with standard coil mattresses and box springs as they can be cleaned and the use of a wet/dry vac is sufficient enough to pull out liquids and allow for a complete dry out period. It may also be noted that the traditional beds like this usually have as an accessory to purchase - a waterproof cover of some type well secured underneath a mattress pad cover. Result - Attempted disinfecting of mattress, 3rd mattress topper - same issue - no waterproof cover, just regular cover made from cotton/polyester materials with general decoration on it - offwhite in color. Injury - medical : due to resulting internal contamination/mold interior of mattress, I was having breathing issues and headaches that became problematic which I tried to resolve from cleaning and replacing and modifying what I could at the time.
