The product, in the report: Banner brand mattresses and foundations

Banner Mattress Factory Intentionally Puts Moldy Padding In Their Mattresses And Foundations

I recently started helping out at the factory to pick up some extra hours. I and another new coworker noticed some moldy padding hanging on a rack that was waiting to be put into the new mattress foundations. We also saw a large pile of the moldy padding upstairs. We asked three of the mattress makers why they were using the moldy padding. They replied “[REDACTED] (factory manager) told us we can’t afford to throw it away and we have to use them. You should see some of the [REDACTED] they have us put in these things.” What they are doing is not simply disgusting but also dangerous. If a child were to sleep on one of these mattresses it has the potential to kill them. They can develop asthma, auto immune disorders, a lethal lung infection, and etcetera. If someone with a mold allergy slept on it they could die. I reported this to my store manager who then reported it to the district manager. I had a meeting with the DM where I explained the situation and told him there needed to be a product recall. He was dismissive and assured me that wouldn’t be necessary because none of the moldy padding was ever used in any Banner products and the workers were just telling “tall tales”. After my meeting with the DM, the mattress makers were mad saying “I shouldn’t have done that” and “we never said that”. I talked with the coworker who was with me when they originally told us about it. He said I was right but he wasn’t going to pursue it because he can’t afford to lose his job. I was also talking with another employee who makes the foundations.

Me: “The DM was trying to convince me that none of that moldy padding ever got used in anything” He then replies quickly without thinking.” Coworker: “Yeah they did, I used some of it yesterday. I…I…a mean I might have… Don’t tell them I said that.” Me: “You’re not gonna back me up on this?” Coworker: “No, I can’t afford to lose my job. It’s not my problem, etcetera”.

Four people have told me directly that they have to use this moldy padding in Banner products. At least four other people know about it. None of them are willing to back me up or do anything about it. They are too afraid of losing their jobs to do the right thing. Banner Mattress has a lot of good people working for them who knew nothing about this. I don’t want anyone to lose their job. I don’t want to hurt this company. However, I can’t ignore this. I won’t let them pretend this never happened. People need to know what they could be sleeping on.
