The product, in the report: Tempur-Pedic Outlet Store, Pro Adapt Medium Hybrid Mattress Queen size
We purchased a Tempur-pedic Pro Adapt Medium Hybrid from Tempur-pedic Outlet store online on Jun 27. It was delivered on July 10 to daughter’s 1 bedroom 1 bath apartment 850sq ft. That is when the nightmare began. The chemical odor and VOC’s emitted from this mattress literally overtook the apartment and penetrated every orfice of the apartment, the walls, the cabinets, the floors, her furniture, blankets, pillows, bedding, area rugs, clothing! We contaced Tempur-pedic multiple times, including reporting to the [REDACTED] and they are not standing by thier product nor budging on extending us any customer service. Our daughter has since developed headaches, dizziness, disorientaion, head pressure, ear pressure and mental anguish, as she was beginning her PA progam in [REDACTED], as if that isn’t stressfull enough. The apartment is unlivable, her belongings are at our house in [REDACTED], in the back yard trying to get the chemical odor off. Our back yard smells like a chemical lab. The mattress was removed on the 22nd from her apartment, and yet the smell will not go away. We have spent thousands on cleaning solutions, activated charcoal, air purifiers, commercial fans, and rented a commercial air scrubber, and have vented the apartment every day since... to no avail!!

The product, in the report: The product is the foundation under our Tempurpedic King mattress. These are XL twin foundations also made by and marketed by Tempurpedic.
We purchased a Tempurpedic mattress and foundations for our condo about 9 years ago. When we returned this season, much of the fabric under the foundations had totally disintegrated and was laying on the floor. It was not possible to pick up the debris because it turned to dust so the only way to eliminate this fabric was to vacuum it up and to vacuum It off the bottom of the foundations. I have contacted the company but they don’t care and they aren’t concerned about health issues associated with this disintegrating material, but I certainly am concerned as I have had really bad allergy attacks at night since we arrived here.

Caller says that his wife has had back and hip surgery. The physical therapist wrote a letter stating that he thinks the mattress is unsafe. The mattress is not firm enough to support his wife’s back. The side of the mattress sometimes collapses because there is no support on the side. Caller is concerned that if she rolls to the side of the bed it could collapse and cause the wife to fall out during the night.
Caller believes this product is a fall hazard. - additional info attached.

Emergency room Made Jul 25, 2018, sent to the company Aug 2, 2018, published by CPSC Aug 16, 2018
The product, in the report: Tempurpedic Mattress purchased direct from the manufacture
I purchased a Tempurpedic Mattress direct about 10 years ago. The past 4 months and counting I have suffered from allergic outbreaks of giant hives, chemical burns, lip & eye swelling and close to Anaphylaxis. After months of steroid injections, blood work and pills it was found that I have now an extreme Polyurethane TDI sensitivity due to the long term exposure and break down of the memory foam in the Tempurpedic. Years of off gassing and the foam break down has left me with a hyper sensitivity to the material which is also found in many other products. The major outbreaks landing me in the hospital or doctors resulted at night after laying in the bed. I can no longer take steroids and it is very difficult to avoid products with PU in it and therefore am suffering and going to start Xoliar injections next. Tempurpedic when contacted and confronted with months of horrific pictures showing the hives and chemical burns on my body, was very apologetic and quick to refund in full the price of the bed purchase 10 years ago. I additionally submitted medical co-pays, medication and time of work due to the damages and they are, a month later, stating it is still under review. I have since contacted a lawyer who is reviewing the information. I am concerned because I am reading other people have suffered breathing and skin issues as a result from sleeping on a Tempurpedic mattress or memory foam material beds. My entire life now revolves around avoiding this material. I work in a school so I am not exposed to this material in an occupational setting.

The product, in the report: twin size mattress
10/16/2015: As soon as the mattress was delivered to her home, the consumer noticed a very powerful odor that resembles gasoline.
Later that week, the consumer contacted the retailer and the manufacturer. Both companies told the consumer the same thing. It was suggested that she open the windows in her home and to walk on the mattress, which they believed would help with the problem. However, nothing she tried worked. When the consumer called the manufacturer about her problem, their reps (names unknown) blame the retailer and when she calls the retailer, the manufacturer is blamed.
The consumer has experienced nausea and headaches. The symptoms are only present, when the consumer is close to the bed. If she goes to a different room in her home, she does not experience the symptoms.
The consumer cannot sleep in the bed and believes that it presents an inhalation safety hazard.
The consumer uses an air purifier and closes the door to the room with the mattress in it.

The product, in the report: TEMPUR-Contour Rhapsody Breeze Queen: Medium-firm, thick comfort layer, TEMPUR-Breeze™ cooling.
To Whom it May Concern:
February
I Purchased the TEMPUR - Rhapsody mattress from a Tempur endorsed retailer in Birmingham, AL in the Spring of 2013.
I immediately began exhibiting symptoms of an allergic skin reaction. Due diligence requried me to explore every possibility before forming the hypothesis upon which this incident report is founded.
I have medical records to show that no such skin reactions were present in my medical record prior to owning this mattress. When I was sold the mattress, no one mentioned nor did any warning labels explicitly state the potential for skin reactions or anything of that nature.
I am confident that the Tempur-Pedic North America, Inc should be held responsibile in part for knowingly selling a product which has the potential to inflict consumers with this infirmity.
Thanks and kind regards.

The product, in the report: Tempur Pedic Cloud memory foam mattress
My husband and I purchased a Tempur Pedic memory foam mattress and when the mattress was delivered and unwrapped, it emitted a very strong chemical odor that immediately gave me a headache and made me nauseous and dizzy. Since having the mattress in my home, I’ve had sinus problems and constant headaches. I have not slept on the mattress but experience these symptoms by simply being in the same room. Of course, the salesman did not disclose any health related information about owning this kind of product. After reading so many similar stories online about the health issues related to off-gassing and memory foam material, I feel like this product is absolutely hazardous and should at a minimum be tested for safety. I’ve been told Tempur Pedic doesn’t disclose their materials used in making the mattress so I have no way of knowing what risk I’m at being exposed to these vapors.

The product, in the report: Tempur-pedic, Tempur cloude luxe mattresses with bases
We purchased a Tempur-pedic memory foam bed. When it arrived it had a strong chemical odor to it. We contacted the saleman and Tempur-pedic and were told this was temporary and would soon dissipate. It did not dissipate, but only got worse. Worst of all, both my wife and I began having headaches, sore throats and difficulty breathing. After two weeks with no relief we called the retailer (Macys) to have the beds removed.
It seems clear that Tempur-pedic mattresses emit a toxic chemical which causes serious health problems. Would like to know what fumes are emenating from the mattresses (formaldehyde?) and why they caused us to get sick.

Emergency room Made May 19, 2014, sent to the company May 29, 2014, published by CPSC Jun 12, 2014
The product, in the report: California King Tempurpedic Contour Select Mattress
I purchased a Contour Select Tempurpedic Mattress from Sleep Train Mattress Center. Initially this mattress was delivered opened and setup with an extremely strong chemical odor.
My home is under 1500 square feet and the odor immediately filled the entire house. I was instructed by the delivery men and the sales person that the smell would dissipate and go away within a few weeks and ultimately there was nothing to be concerned with.
After the mattress had been in my home for roughly two weeks I began to develop severe headaches I had never had before, exhaustion, coordination issues, memory issues, horrible nightmares in the middle of my sleep, and tingling sensations down both of my arms.
During this time the mattress lost its firmness and became incredibly softer, I contacted the initial seller to see if I could get a replacement and they had me call the manufacturer for a replacement. During that time I was struggling in between doctors appointments and to maintain my job with all of the symptoms I was experiencing so the replacement was put on the back burner.
After several doctors visits with little to know help, one doctor asked if i had purchased anything new within my home over the past several months, I told him the only thing I had bought was my new mattress. He recommended that I remove it from the home immediately to see if that might help the symptoms subside.
Since the removal of the mattress my symptoms have subsided significantly although I am still experiencing some residual affects. I am extremely upset at the fact that there were no warnings given to me at the time of purchase, and concerned for others well being in regards to this mattress. it is extremely dangerous and has affected my life in a very significant way.

The product, in the report: Tempurpedic Rhapsody King Memory Foam Mattress
As with other identical stories already summarized on the Consumer Product Safety Commission web page, we purchased a top of the line Tempurpedic Rhapsody Memory Foam King Mattress (approx $3999.00 - tax) and adjustable bases ($2800.00 + tax) plus 69.99 delivery from Mattress Firm. The mattress felt great at the showroom store (very supportive - no odor), but when the mattress was delivered and removed from the plastic bag, my family’s nightmare began. A very strong chemical odor started filling our bedroom. Since the store instructed us to expect such an odor (referred to as off gassing and alleged to be non-toxic) and that it would dissipate within 2-3 days, my family stuck it out and lived with the chemical odor for several days. As instructed by the store, we also walked on the bed daily to progress the off gassing. During this time, my family all slept in alternative locations (son’s room, guest room, gameroom couch) while maintaining an ozone air purification machine, bowls of vinegar, and a window fan in the bedroom as we eventually wanted to enjoy the mattress feel/support we had experienced at the store.
Fast forward several days, the smell never disappeared (it continued to get worse and spread across the entire house). My spouse and two young sons as well as myself started having difficulty breathing (we all tasted chemicals on our tongue and could only get relief by remaining outside the home). After 5 days (having never being able to even tryout the new bed) we paid another $69.99 to have the mattress picked-up and returned to Mattress Firm (thank goodness they had a 100 night money back guarantee). Once the mattress was removed, we spread baking soda (product which should absorb odors and then be easily vacuumed up) throughout the entire bedroom (carpet, furniture, support bases which couldn’t be returned) in an attempt to remove the chemical odor. However, we were not successful at removing the chemical odor.
Since the strong chemical odor remained throughout the entire house (now appearing to be a longer term problem and raising questions without answers), I (having a PhD in Chemistry) started researching the off gas odor and discovered the chemicals used to manufacture and fire retard these polyurethane memory foam mattresses (secret formulations due to US patents, etc) are highly reactive, toxic isocyanates, diols, and other reactive chemical compounds, all of which per MSDSs have very low exposure tolerances and create respiratory issues and skin contact problems at very low concentrations. From what I could locate on the web, I saw no need to contact Tempurpedic as their only response (as expected due to monetary position and size of business) was to provide a generic statement noting they comply with all rules and regs. I was at this point extremely “[REDACTED]” to say the least since I now had no apparent recourse (just hoping family’s health had not been negatively affected due to the short duration).
Fast forward another week (mattress removed from home for approx. 1 week), the chemical odor still remains throughout our entire home (on the walls, clothing, furniture, etc). We have had our carpets/curtain/rugs/cloth furniture steam cleaned (another $320.00 out of pocket cost), continue to run the ozone air purification machine, run window fans 24/7, and have changed all HVAC filters in further attempts to remove the chemical odor. Unfortunately, the chemical odor appears very resistant to removal and continues to remain along with the respiratory health concerns and chemical taste on our tongues. In addition, we now have purchased a new fully organic/natural mattress and are awaiting its arrival, but are afraid to bring the new mattress into the home concerned that it could pose the same issue and/or absorb the chemical odor prolonging our chemical exposure.
Please my family asks that the US government or appropriate US agency progress some type of warning or legislation to address this very apparent toxic chemical poisoning problem before it negatively affect any additional tax paying families.

The product, in the report: Tempur-pedic Cloud Supreme Queen Mattress set
Purchased Tempur-pedic Cloud Supreme mattress set on 7/21/12. The product produces intense chemical off-gassing, which has caused us to experience burning noses and sinuses, sore throats, chemical taste in mouth, headaches, racing heart, jitteriness, and weak knees. The fumes are so strong, that I have not been able to use my master bedroom, since taking delivery of the mattress. After 42 days, Tempur-pedic exchanged the mattress, but the replacement has the same intense off-gassing. We have tried all the recommendations from Tempur-pedic to alleviate the odor - opening all windows, and running fans, as well as removing the cover and washing it - all to no avail. The odor is still very intense and sickening, even after another 35 days with the second mattress. The weather is now turning colder and it is more difficult to leave the windows open 24/7. I am very concerned of the long term health effects of this mattress. I strongly urge you to investigate the toxicity of Tempur-pedic mattresses.

The product, in the report: Foam Mattress
The consumer says the mattress had a toxic odor. Her and her husband both got sick. They had burning eyes, and throat was bothering her. She called the manufacturer to find out what was in it. She was told it was made with polyurethane. The manufacturer told her that in order to release the gases they should jump on the mattress and roll around. The consumer’s concern is that they claim the order would dissipate. She feels that this would make it more dangerous. She complained about it to the retailer and got a refund. Her husband and her feel that this product should not be sold without a warning label and full disclosure of what its made of. The manufacturer told her she should pour baking soda on the mattress.

Since purchasing our tempurpedic bed 5 years ago, within 2 months of sleeping on it, I started having respiratory, ear, sinus and allergy problems and severe sweating. I would wake up every night with an itch in my throat and eyes which would cause me to wake up several times a night and cough uncontrollably. I was constantly clearing my throat through out the day, and my ears have been congested and ringing every day for 5 years. Every year seemed to get worse and the beginning of 2011 everything became severely worse. I started seeing an allergist in the summer of 2011 and was told to stop sleeping on the tempurpedic bed after I was tested. I was told they are made with harsh chemicals that release toxins and gases. After just the first couple of nights, I was sleeping through the night. It has been over 3 weeks now and all my symptoms are improving dramatically. My doctor told me to do some reading on the memory foam to find out more information. I never imagined this would be causing my health issues until I stopped sleeping on the bed, found out what these mattresses are made of, and all the other people who have went through similar problems from sleeping on memory foam.

What gasses are emitted from the TempurPedic King Mattresses? The smell is putrid and the effect is scary. What do you know about the safety of this product? I am nauseated, my throat feels like it is closing and eyes are irritated. Is this a cancer causeing gas?

The product, in the report: Tempurpedic Mattress
I purchased a Tempurpedic mattress when I was 5-months pregnant almost 2 years ago. When the mattress arrived, I was unable to sleep in it due to the terrible nausiating offgassing. I slept on the couch for the remainder of my pregnancy hoping that the smell would dissipate with time. After I brought my newborn baby home, I tried to sleep in my bed again with my baby. The smell was still there. I called the Tempurpedic company and asked if there were any toxic chemicals in the mattress, and I was told there were not. I explained that I had a newborn and I was breastfeeding, so if there was anything toxic, I needed to know. The Tempurpedic customer service rep. assured me that the bed was totally safe. She said the smell was normal and would go away. It has been almost 2 years, and the bed still smells terrible. I need to know if this bed is toxic. I do not want my family to continue sleeping on it if it is. When I called again to report the smell, I was told that noone else had complained about the smell. Meanwhile, I found several complaints online.
Moreover, when we purchased the Tempurpedic mattress, we purchased one for my in-laws, too. My father-in-law was diagnosed with a rare form of cancer almost 6-months after purchasing the mattress for him. I am not sure if the mattress is a factor, but I do not want the mattress to contribute to his failing health. If the mattress is toxic, I do not want him sleeping on it any more. He has been through a great deal of traumatic medical events. He has had one health problem after another after another since then. If this mattress is toxic, I need to know.
I greatly appreciate your investigation of this matter.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]
