The product, in the report: Flextop King i8 Sleep Number SmartBed with FlexFit 2 Smart Adjustable Base. Split king mattress with adjustable air chambers and a flexible base. The mattress splits at the top where the base flexes, creating a gap during normal use.
A Sleep Number Flextop King i8 SmartBed with a FlexFit 2 Smart Adjustable Base developed a structural gap at the top of the mattress where it flexes and splits. The gap developed within the first year of normal use with no misuse or abuse of the product.
When I first noticed the gap and reported it to Sleep Number in November 2025, they initially said there was no issue. After sending photos to a specialist, they reversed their position and confirmed the gap was a problem that needed to be addressed. A technician came out, parts were replaced under warranty, and the issue was marked as resolved.
A few months later, the gap returned. This time, Sleep Number refused to take action and told me a widening gap is normal behavior for this type of mattress.
It is not normal. A gap wide enough to trap a person is a serious entrapment and suffocation hazard. I found my toddler’s face trapped inside this gap. My child was at risk of suffocation.
Sleep Number has since discontinued this mattress model entirely. In their response to a billing dispute, they stated that a gap reaching up to 6 inches is expected behavior from normal use. This was never disclosed at the point of sale and does not appear anywhere in the Terms and Conditions of Sale. The gap currently measures approximately 3 to 4 inches and continues to widen, consistent with Sleep Number’s own written admission that it can reach 6 inches.

The product, in the report: Mattress
The consumer indicates that he sleeps on his bed eight to nine hours per day. One day, the consumer noticed a deep burn on the back of his leg however he was unaware of its cause. Eventually the consumer found out that it was due to his mattress. The consumer visited his doctor and received medication; after months of treatment, it appears the three-inch diameter scar is shrinking.
The consumer contacted the Manufacturer and explained the situation. The representative he spoke to arranged for the heating element of the mattress to be replaced.
The consumer continues to sleep on his mattress.

The product, in the report: Sleep Number Flex Top King iLE Sleep IO Mattress Flex Top King Flex Fit 1, Adjustable Base
My wife and I purchased a sleep number king size split top bed just over a year ago. The top is split so either side of the top of the bed can be raised independently. After about 6 months we noticed at the top of the mattresses was a gap. You could push the two halves together and the gap would lessen but it would not close. This gap is 7” wide at the top of the mattress. When our grandchildren are visiting they like to watch television in our bed because it is so big. Earlier this year 3 of our grandchildren( ages 7 and 4 year old twins ) were over and before bedtime they were in our bed watching a special show. One of the twins rolled over and rolled off of his pillow and he fell in the split between the mattresses and his head was stuck between the two halves of the mattress. He was crying and very upset but was more scared than hurt. This past week my wife rolled over in bed and her head fell into the gap, at this point we knew we had to figure out how to close the gap and were disappointed in ourselves that we didn’t do anything about this before now. We called the Sleep Number store we purchased the bed at and they recommended we call customer service. We called Sleep Number customer service and spoke to [REDACTED] who informed us that a gap of 7” to 8’ was normal. We continued to research the split top sleep number bed because we could not believe that this was normal. We could not find any of Sleep Numbers videos of brochures showing the split top bed that either showed the gap or mentioned the gap. When we called the Orland Park store where we purchased the bed they did not know anything about a 6” gap. We spoke to a supervisor at customer service who reiterated that a 6” to 8” gap was normal. I explained about the issue we had with our grandchild and she had no comment.

The product, in the report: Air chamber matrass
We purchased a Sleep Number bed, after a number of years my husband became very ill with lung disease. The medical center specialist advised us to check our matress. We found mold in both chambers of the air portion of the matress. We were never advised by the company that there was a problem. We found out after the fact that they had changed the fiber of the air chambers to one that was mold resistant.

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Jul 7, 2011, published by CPSC Aug 16, 2011
The product, in the report: Mattress
Consumer stated that after using the mattress for the 1st night she and her spouse started experiencing headaches and sweating profusely, and were restless due to heat emitting from it.
Less than 1 month later, she contacted the store and was advised to purchase new mattress pads to keep the mattress cool, but this did not resolve the problem.
Consumer and her spouse continued to experience health issues with this product, like numbness in hands and feet and shortness of breath. They visited their physician but the illness has not been diagnosed. The physician advised that it could be related to some sort of toxin which had seeped into their bodies.
6/2011 Consumer contacted the retailer again and was advised to return the mattress pad, and they advise to use different sheets. The retailer refuse to give them more information on the chemicals used in the product.
7/7/11 Consumer has removed the mattress from the room to see if this would alleviate their symptoms. Within 2 days they noticed a difference in even the air quality of the bedroom.
Consumer is concerned that this product is a health hazard and feels that it should be reported.
