  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Sep 13, 2026, sent to the company Sep 17, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 8, 2026

The product, in the report: Memory foam mattress, 12-inch thickness, Queen size. The item features a white quilted fabric outer cover wrapping the internal foam core and fire-retardant sock material.

I am reporting a severe product safety hazard involving a mattress actively shedding sharp, microscopic fiberglass-like fire-retardant fibers through its intact outer cover. The outer zippered fabric cover was NEVER unzipped, altered, or removed. The hazardous fibers are migrating entirely through the manufactured outer fabric during normal, intended residential use. This has resulted in systemic environmental contamination of the bedroom air, bedding, clothing, and surrounding property. No immediate physical injuries occurred, but the shards pose an active dermal, ocular, and respiratory health hazard to the occupants of the room. This issue has been officially reported to the distributor (Amazon) under Product Safety Ticket ID: [REDACTED].

The product, in the report: Brand Name: Signature Sleep Manufacturer: Dorel Home Furnishings (Dorel Home Products)Model Name: Memoir 8” Memory Foam Mattress Model Number: 5474296ASIN (Amazon Standard Identification Number): B005A4ON90Size and Color: Queen size, 8-inch thickness, White tight-top cover.Dimensions: 80”L x 60”W x 8”Th Product Description: This is a memory foam bed-in-a-box mattress. The older version of this specific model (purchased approximately 11 years ago) featured a zippered outer cover with an inner fire-retardant barrier sleeve made of glass fiber/fiberglass. The mattress cover featured a zipper on the bottom or perimeter, indicating it was removable, but opening it released mass contamination.

A mattress cover failed and released catastrophic amounts of hidden fiberglass shards into a residential home. The product involved was a Signature Sleep brand mattress (manufactured by Dorel Home Products). An adult resident was using the product in a standard residential bedroom. The product was being used and maintained according to the official instructions, which indicated that the outer fabric mattress cover was removable and machine washable. Severe injuries occurred as a direct result of this incident. When the mattress cover was unzipped for standard maintenance, it immediately exposed a raw, highly friable inner layer of glass wool/fiberglass. This action instantly released a massive cloud of billions of microscopic, airborne fiberglass shards throughout the entire house. The glass fibers quickly entered the home’s HVAC ventilation system, cross-contaminating multiple rooms. The residents suffered severe physical injuries, including intense, painful skin rashes and severe eye irritation.Furthermore, the airborne glass dust triggered a severe, acute asthma flare-up in an adult resident. The respiratory distress was so severe that it required an urgent care visit on May 30, where the resident had to be treated with prescribed steroid medication to control the lung inflammation. The home remains completely unlivable due to these health hazards, forcing the immediate displacement of the residents into temporary housing.

The product, in the report: Name: Signature Sleep Memoir 12” High-Density, Responsive Memory Foam Mattress - Bed-in-a-Box, Twin Price at time of purchase 149$ Model # 5475 096

I purchased two memory foam twin mattresses from Amazon in 2017. The mattress were used with my toddler and 5 year old at the time. We still have the mattress. Both children developed persistent allergies that continued for years. One needed nasal turbinates surgery as a result of her constantly inflamed sinuses .

I never thought to check my mattress as l frequently wash the bedding of young children . I needed a new bed for my 6 yr old and decided to look into purchasing the same mattress because l do indeed love the feel of it. Upon looking at current AMAZON reviews, l noticed many people commenting about the mattress shedding fiberglass. I called the manufacturer listed on the mattress AMERIWOOD HOME. But they referred me to DHP products. I asked the representative to check the model # of my bed and inform me whether or not fiberglass was used in the bed and after speaking to two representatives...it is confirmed. The second representative went as far as saying they didn’t use fiberglass but when she checked the model # of my bed, she retracted her statement and said that they haven’t used fiberglass after 2017 ( conveniently so--- since l purchased my two twin beds in 2017)

Beds Signature Sleep Memoir 12” High-Density, Responsive Memory Foam Mattress - Bed-in-a-Box, Twin List price at the time $149.00

    Model #5475 096

Current Amazon reviews of this bed ALSO mention Fiberglass shedding There is no warning on the mattress cover to advise against removal of the cover. No indication of fiberglass used . I was offered no solution. Correcting this issue will be VERY costly .

MANUFACTURER OFFERED NO SOLUTION. NO REPLACEMENT. NO REFUND IN THE LEAST. ALL I WANT IS FOR OTHERS TO KNOW THE HEALTH THREAT INVOLVED. There is still no information listed on the product page to earn those who purchased the beds in 2017 or before. It is an excellent feeling mattress...but not worth potential health risks

The product, in the report: Memory foam mattress

I have purchased a signature sleep memory foam mattress from Amazon.com 3 years ago; about a month ago, I found out that there are clear, almost invisible sparkles coming out of it. After a call with manufacture, I discovered that these sparkles are fiberglass. They cause irritation to the skins when in contact and are extremely difficult to extract from fabrics. As result, I have to throw away tons of cloths, all my pillows, mattress covers, pillow covers, blankets. This product has caused undue financial and emotional stress to our family that includes one 6 month old baby. We don’t know what potential health risks we are exposed of because of this product and from the review we see similar things have happened.
