First aid Made Sep 23, 2026, sent to the company Sep 28, 2026, published by CPSC Oct 13, 2026
The product, in the report: Serta iComfort TempTouch Blue Touch 300 Firm king size mattress. This is a residential sleeping mattress designed and marketed for normal household use. The mattress has a removable zippered outer cover and contains multiple internal material layers, including components associated with the mattress fire barrier system. The mattress was purchased new from Mattress Firm and was used in an ordinary bedroom setting for its intended purpose of sleeping. The product involved in this report is specifically the Serta iComfort TempTouch Blue Touch 300 Firm in king size. The safety concern involves the release and migration of extremely fine reflective glass like fibers from within or beneath the mattress cover after the zippered outer cover was removed during normal household handling. The mattress was not cut open, intentionally damaged, altered, or otherwise misused.
A king size Serta iComfort TempTouch Blue Touch 300 Firm mattress was being used normally in a residential home for its intended purpose of sleeping. During normal handling of the mattress, the consumer accessible zippered outer cover was removed. A large quantity of extremely fine, reflective, glass like fibers became visible on and around the mattress and were later discovered throughout the surrounding living environment.
The fibers transferred readily to bedding, clothing, furniture, flooring, personal belongings, laundry, and other household contents. The home uses central air conditioning, which continued operating before the nature and extent of the contamination was understood. This created serious concern that airborne fibers may have been distributed from the bedroom into other areas of the home.
Before the material was fully recognized, the mattress cover and affected textiles were handled, washed, dried, moved, and used during normal household activity. This created additional possible contamination involving the washer, dryer, clothing, bedding, furniture, and other personal property. Adults and children were living in and moving throughout the home while these fibers were present.
The mattress was not intentionally damaged, cut open, altered, or misused. There was no reasonable expectation that removing a zippered mattress cover during ordinary household handling could result in microscopic fibrous material escaping and spreading throughout the home. Had this danger been clearly understood, the cover would never have been removed.
The consequences have been severe. The incident has created concerns regarding respiratory exposure, skin exposure, eye exposure, contaminated clothing and household belongings, contaminated appliances, possible contamination of the heating and air conditioning system, environmental testing, professional remediation, replacement of affected property, and temporary displacement from the residence.
What began with a single household mattress developed into a whole home contamination concern affecting the living environment and a substantial amount of personal property. The financial consequences have also been significant, including testing costs, potential remediation costs, replacement of contaminated property, laundry and cleaning expenses, and temporary housing expenses.
The exact composition of the fibers has not yet been conclusively established through laboratory analysis. Testing is being pursued to determine whether the material is fiberglass, man made vitreous fiber, or another fibrous material associated with the mattress. This report does not claim that the fiber composition has already been scientifically confirmed.
This incident is being reported because a consumer sleeping product should not create a situation where microscopic fibers can migrate throughout a residence, contaminate personal property, potentially expose adults and children, and create the need for extensive environmental testing, remediation, property replacement, and displacement.
I am requesting that this product safety issue be investigated, including the mattress construction, internal fire barrier materials, fiber containing components, labeling, warnings, zippered cover design, and the potential for internal fibers to escape into a residential environment when the cover is removed.

No one hurt Made Dec 31, 2025, sent to the company Jan 5, 2026, published by CPSC Jan 29, 2026
The product, in the report: The product is a Serta iComfort Series mattress, queen size. The exact model variant is unknown; it may be a hybrid model with a white and blue exterior design. The mattress is currently sealed inside a plastic containment bag with a fitted covering placed on top. Due to fiberglass contamination concerns, the mattress has not been disturbed, and product labels, model numbers, or additional identifying information are not visible or accessible at this time.
We purchased a Serta iComfort Series mattress approximately between September 2016 and April 2017 from Value City Furniture in Evansville, Indiana. The mattress purchased was a floor or demonstration model, as it was the last one available in the store. The mattress includes a zippered outer cover. At the time of purchase, the presence of a zipper reasonably suggested that the cover could be removed for cleaning. On December 28, 2025, the mattress cover was unzipped, removed, and washed. After the cover was off, fiberglass fibers became noticeable over time within the bedroom environment. Normal household activity occurred in the room, including children being on the bed. Fibers were later observed dispersing into the surrounding area. Fiberglass contamination spread to bedding, clothing, toys, furniture, and other household surfaces. Cleanup and assessment are ongoing. Three children were present in the household at the time of exposure. At the time of this report, no observable symptoms have been identified. Medical evaluations are being scheduled as a precaution; however, access to providers has been delayed due to holiday closures. We are not aware of any clear, prominent, or permanent warnings on the mattress or the removable cover indicating that the cover should not be removed or that fiberglass was present beneath it. If labeling existed, it was not apparent or known to us at the time of purchase or use. The zippered design created a reasonable consumer expectation that removal of the cover was safe. After the incident, we became aware that manufacturer guidance and related sources now advise consumers not to remove mattress covers due to fiberglass exposure risk. This guidance was not known to us at the time of purchase. As a precautionary measure, sofas in the living area have been covered with plastic sheeting at our own expense, and items identified so far as potentially contaminated have been sealed in plastic bags and isolated in the living room. An additional mattress in the master bedroom has been covered in plastic so that sleeping arrangements can continue while minimizing further exposure. These actions were taken to reduce the spread of fiberglass fibers while cleanup and assessment are ongoing. The fiberglass contamination has resulted in property impact, including household items believed to be contaminated and potentially requiring disposal. This report is submitted to document the exposure event, product characteristics, and resulting safety concerns.

The product, in the report: Mattress; it is a Serta Applause II. The following numbers appear on the front of tag: 820-3050/4076991. REG NO OH 72723 (MI). Prototype ID LD1. On the back of tag: LPS-1 SERTA-FR-NFR. ERS-1 FRW REV01. I purchased the mattress new in 2017.
I believe I have a toxic mattress; it is a Serta Applause II. The following numbers appear on the tag: 820-3050/4076991. REG NO OH 72723 (MI). I purchased the mattress new in 2017 but the problems have only shown themselves for the last year. Symptoms for my wife: Severe digestive problems, cramping when she eats, constipation; acute insomnia. The only thing I noticed for myself was night sweats. My wife has been to a number of specialists in various fields, with no answers. We noticed that when she went away to visit, her symptoms disappeared. We thought she may have an allergy, saw an allergy specialist, negative on allergies. Bought a high end air filtration system, no improvement. Three weeks ago we started sleeping in another bedroom; all symptoms for both of us have disappeared. I would like any information you might have on toxic mattresses (and mine in particular). There seems to be nothing on-line. I wish avoid this problem when I replace the mattress.

The product, in the report: Serta I Series 1000
I bought a mattress in late 2020 the Serta I-Series 1000. Upon washing the mattress cover these was millions of fiberglass or carbon fibers all over my bedroom, living room, laundry room, it was a nightmare. I will need to spend thousands to replace several items that have been damaged permanetly. The cleaning alone costed thousands and 3 days of missed work. There was no warning labels nothing that indicated you couldn’t wash or remove the cover. I am severe asthmatic and had breathing issues for 2 weeks after cleanup. I still find little particles and have been told by professionals it’s likely falling from my popcorn ceilings. They quoted 3200$ to paint the rooms as they would need to wear hazmat gear.

Hurt, care not known Made Aug 6, 2018, sent to the company Aug 29, 2018, published by CPSC Sep 13, 2018
The product, in the report: Serta Blue Touch Foam Mattress
July 17, 2018
[REDACTED] Chief Executive Officer Mattress Finn, Inc. 5815 Gulf Freeway Houston. Texas 77023
Re: customer Dear Mr. [REDACTED]: In response to your many robo-calls attempting to survey my satisfaction for recent purchases from Mattress Firm, I am requesting a refund of the $107.79 (including tax) delivery charge for buying my second (more expensive no less) mattress, a result of a most unsatisfactory experience.
Because of ongoing back pain issues requiring months of physical therapy, on June 6, 2018 - without performing my usual online due diligence - I walked into one of your stores and purchased a Serta Blue Touch foam mattress. If I ever knew I would be buying something with such a noxious chemical odor that may not dissipate for months (if ever), I would never have made the purchase.
I felt like I was sleeping on a block of carcinogens. In fact, I had to stay on the couch for the first few nights, the smell being that strong. I contacted Serta whose only simplistic and unrealistic advice was to let it air out for a day. I actually stripped off the bedding daily for 14 days with the chemical odor absorbed right into my pillows.
Mattress Firm’s salesmen offered two ludicrous suggestions: 1) place cut Granny Smith apples skin-side down on the mattress to absorb the odor (I wasted several good pieces of fruit), and 2) walk on the mattress to release the gasses from the foam bubbles (I injured my foot and almost fell off the bed).
After two weeks of tortured sleep with my throat burning and intermittent coughing nightly, on July 2 - my bedroom constantly smelling like a [REDACTED] factory - I sent it back and instead bought a Sealy spring mattress.
Having had free delivery for my first purchase, I see no reason whatsoever for my having to pay #107. 79 for delivery of my second purchase. Though I understand that some consumers want to return a mattress they ultimately may not find completely comfortable (the foam one was actually good for my back), in order to breathe clearly again at night, I had no choice but to return the Serta to safeguard my health.
Who knows what’s going into unsuspecting consumers’ lungs and into the environment? This mattress should Immediately be taken off the market. It is a defective product.
Thank you for your prompt attention. I have not yet posted any online reviews of your company or Serta regarding this incident. Please don’t make me regret having done business with Mattress Firm.
Sincerely, [REDACTED]

The product, in the report: Serta Perfect Sleeper Highfield Plush Mattress
New Serta Perfect Sleeper Highfield Plush mattress gives off toxic fumes. After 10 days of airing it out it still continues to smell really bad. We have had all windows open and ceiling fans on but nothing has helped. Our son even got sick with sinus, ear and upper respiratory infection while the mattress was in our home. Contacting Serta their representative claimed they must have forgotten the carbon packages in the packaging and advised to get the mattress out of the house asap. Despite admitting their mistake Serta still charged us $200 and 15% of the price to have it returned/exchanged. We have owned 4 of these same mattresses before and didn’t have a problem with those.

The product, in the report: memory foam mattress in the queen size
After sleeping on the mattress on the third night the consumer noticed that mattress had a very pungent chemical odor. She began to experience symptoms of fatigue, cold/allergy like symptoms, itchy hands, and minor hip pain.
Around 2/10/2012 the consumer decided to open the windows in the room with a fan inside. She closed the door and sealed the bottom so no air could get in. She tried that method for two days.
Around 2/11/2012 while sleeping in the bed the consumer’s husband began to feel numb on his left side and experienced swelling on that side as well.
On 2/13/2012 the consumer and her husband decided to sleep in another room in the home on another mattress. She indicated that they both feel better.
She contacted the retailer on 2/13/2012 and was advised that she would have to hold on to the mattress for thirty days before she could exchange it.
The consumer indicated that she would try to air the mattress out again on 2/14/2012. She did not indicate if she would discontinue the use of the mattress.
She or her husband didn’t not seek any medical attention but she indicated that she would if her symptoms do not clear up within 24 hours.
She does not plan on contacting the firm. Consumer ADDED: Saw a Serta Response to a consumer, which was not favorable to consumer. America’s Mattress Store removed mattress Feb 16th 2012. Was still lingering odor in house for days after removal. Had severe back pain and numbness on left arm and leg after sleeping on mattress also developed cough and cold symptoms. Other Victim developed upper respiratory problems, lost sense of smell. Saw Dr. at Urgent Care. Received Prednisone for allergic reaction. I no longer have mattress so there is no pictures, I found hundreds of illness complaints about these memory foam mattresses. I have printed over 50 pages.
