No one hurt Made Feb 23, 2023, sent to the company May 18, 2023, published by CPSC Jun 2, 2023
The product, in the report: Mattress
The consumer received his mattress on 02/03/2023 and set up in his bedroom. Because of the freezing temperatures the consumer had to make his bed five hours later. The consumer slept on his new mattress the same night and, by the next morning, noticed a very distinct moldy smell emitting from the mattress. The consumer stripped all the sheets and pillows from his bed.
The consumer states that the smell is still pungent even after having placed four charcoal odor absorbers underneath the bed. The consumer leaves the ceiling fan on during the day so that at night the foul smell is tolerable; he is able to sleep on the mattress until about 03:00 A.M. when he has to go sleep in his recliner because of the smell.
The consumer contacted the manufacturer and explained the situation; he was provided information on how to try and get rid of the smell, like opening the windows, and putting a bowl of vinegar in the room. Because these remedies did not alleviate the situation, the manufacturer asked for photographs on 02/22/2023 however the consumer is unsure how this will help them.
The consumer does not know if he will have the mattress for at least the next thirty days in case an investigation ensues.
I ran air filtration 24/7 in my bedroom to put up with the smell. I believe this has aggravated my allergies and asthma.

Hurt, no treatment Made Feb 2, 2023, sent to the company Feb 7, 2023, published by CPSC Feb 22, 2023
The product, in the report: Sealy Posturepedic Plus 14 inch Plush Innerspring Euro Pillow Top Queen Mattress, Model: 527688 Queen 00130290, Date of manufacture: 6420. 01-26-2023, Prototype ID: LU10, Reg. no. CA 41365 (AZ), Warranty sticker numbers 52768851, F0003146420
I purchased a brand new Sealy Posturepedic Plus mattress. The chemical odor emanating from the mattress is overwhelming. Within 45 minutes of laying on the mattress for the first time, my family began experiencing symptoms including headache, nausea, tingling, and swollen nasal passages. Even with the ceiling fan on high and window opened for 2 hours the odor remains. The smell and physical effects were so terrible that we had to remove the mattress from our house and place it outside.

Seen by a doctor or nurse Made Oct 20, 2016, sent to the company Oct 28, 2016, published by CPSC Nov 21, 2016
The product, in the report: King sized dealt posturpedic hybrid mattress purchased from Haverty’s Furniture store in Savannah, GA.
We purchased a Sealy posturpedic hybrid mattress from Haverty’s furniture store about 2 years ago. The mattress has recently been emitting a very strong chemical smell, similar to the smell memory foam has when first purchased. My 2 year old baby sleeps in our bed and began breaking out into hives over the past month. We left town for several days and the hives subsided. The day after we returned, the smell had worsened significantly, and the hives returned. This time, thr the hives were much worse than previously, covering her entire body and with with her eyes nearly swollen shut. The pediatrician put her on a course of steroids as a result. My wife has been having respiratory irritation whenever she enters the bedroom, requiring us to sleep in the guest room. She also suffered from hives twice in the past several months, once requiring her to go on steroids as well. She was pregnant at the time, which made it it even more distressing to be requiring steroids.

The product, in the report: Sealy Posturepedic® Prichard Ultra Firm King Mattress
Purchased a new Sealy Posturepedic® Prichard Ultra Firm King Mattress from Costco. It was comfortable, but the fumes were intolerable. Even with the windows open, I had trouble breathing and had a bad headache every day. I had to retreat to sleep on the living room floor. I had Costco return to my home to pick up the mattress set. I have purchased other Sealy mattress sets in the past and never had this type of issue before. The manufacturer should disclose what type of chemicals are being outgassed. The manufacturer should reformulate the manufacturing process to reduce outgassing, and/or air out the products at their factory before shipping them to customers. I wasted a lot of time and money dealing with this and now I am having back pain from sleeping on the floor and I am back to square one trying to find a mattress I can sleep on. Consumers have a right to know what exactly the risks are when buying a new mattress, and the manufacturers and sellers are not disclosing important safety information.

The product, in the report: Sealy’s Queen Mattress
This letter serves as a formal complaint against Sleep City located at 10140-1 Philips Highway, Jacksonville, Florida 32256 and Sealy Manufacture Company, One Office Parkway @ Sealy Drive, Trinity, North Carolina 27370. At his point, we feel the only thing left for us to do is ask the Consumer Safety Product Commission to investigate Sealy for selling mattresses that pose a health risk because they are designed below the standards. This specific Sealy Mattress we purchased from Sleep City is designed so that the head and feet rest an inch or more lower than the midriff which causes neck and back pain. To see what others customers are saying about Sealy mattresses, please Google Sealy’s Consumer Complaints. The following is part of applicable data: Sealy’s Queen Mattress, 516126 Queen68660038, PC#2402, PGC#GP02, SN420723122402, Date for Mfg. 07-23-12MJ, and made in Orlando Florida 32837. Despite several pleas to Sealy and Sleep City to send an Inspector out to our home to inspect the Mattress, they have refused to do so. That is because they likely know our complaint is valid. We would appreciate your agency investigating this product as we firmly believe its construction falls below the standards causing numbness and neck pain. It is time to stop Mattress Companies from selling products that are not structured to provide the comfort and service they claim. We appreciate your service.

Emergency room Made May 24, 2012, sent to the company Jun 1, 2012, published by CPSC Jun 22, 2012
The product, in the report: Sealy Box spring corner guard
On the Sealy box spring there are 4 thin metal corner guards. While walking to my bed I received a laceration to my left toe. After stitches and surgery it healed. 3 months later the same incident happened and I have received stitches again. These corner guards have caused me more trouble and are very dangerous. Regardless of the guard being polished and buffed they are still sharper than a “butterkife”, and there is no rounded edge to help protect consumers from this issue. While taking them off the bed I also almost cut my hand, Therefore they are an issue should not be used. I would advise everyone to remove these guards or avoid buying this specific box spring mattress with the metal corner guards. This will save you any injuries and some hospital visits. Also see a surgeon if this does happen because It cut through some nerves and I cannot feel one side of my toe.

The product, in the report: mattress
Consumer feels that her mattress or foundation of her bed is safety concern because she can’t sleep. The consumer stated that she wakes up drained and sometimes experiences headaches. The consumer feels that this may be derived from the fire retardant chemicals in the bed The consumer has had 2 similar mattresses and experiences similar difficulties. She purchased one in November of 2011 and the first night she woke up from a terrible dream and her heart was pounding. The consumer had this mattress for about 4 months before she got rid of the mattress in March of 2011. The second mattress the consumer bought was a different brand purchased on 2/24/2011 and was not delivered until March 11, 2011 The consumer has not experienced any rashes or markings from the mattresses.
She contacted the manufacturer of the first mattress throughout December of 2010 and January 2011 who would not assist her referred her back to the retailer. The consumer contacted the retailer throughout December of 2010 and January 2011 and initially was not receiving any assistance. The consumer had called her credit card company who assisted her in eventually returning the mattress back to the retailer on the 3rd of April 2011. However, in March the mattress was removed from her home.
The consumer called the retailer and manufacturer in May about her second mattress and both indicated they would not take it back because she had the product for longer than the time allotted to return the product. (consumer had the product for 3 months versus the one month permitted to return the mattress). The consumer feels that her first mattress “permeated” her home and the smell of her mattress in her home was evident. The consumer is on her 4th foundation for her bed and the fourth one is a polymer and doesn’t have the same odors of the other foundations she purchased.

First aid Made May 22, 2011, published by CPSC Jun 14, 2011
The product, in the report: box spring set for king size mattress
My wife and I have repeatedly cut ourselves on the thin sheet metal “corner protectors” on our Sealy Posturepedic box springs. They are probably 20 gauge steel, or perhaps even thinner, without any sort of rolled edge. They are vertical, so if you put your foot down too close to the corner of the bed, you risk a nasty cut.
The date below is only the latest of at least 5 incidents. Although no injuries needed more than first aid, several I was cut through the thick skin of my heel, and my wife was cut through the skin under the ball of the big toe.
