The product, in the report: Lucid Mattress, California King size. Memory foam. manufacturer cvmlwb003 ny cvb inc logan utah model ovlu1045mf33b. Purchased 2018 from Amazon.

I am a 35 year old woman in good health. I had noticed over the last several months that my breathing had worsened, my sleep was poor, my skin constantly itched, and I felt tired and uncomfortable all the time. One more morning, I discovered a fine, shiny carpet of fiberglass composite coating the ground next to my side of the bed. When I put my feet down, they burned. A small hole had leaked massive amounts of fiberglass composite fire retardant. It is believed that the migration of fibers had occurred slowly over the last several years, as we never removed the mattress cover.

In addition to the mechanical irritation of fiberglass and the materials used with it, I discovered that I have a severe allergy to the composite. My breathing has been difficult and my limbs have swollen to lymphedemic proportions. I can’t sleep, wear a respirator and gloves, and have slept in a bathtub. We have spent hundreds on HEPA vacuum rentals, air scrubber rentals, medication for me, industrial laundromat runs, discarded clothing, bedding, and other items, cleaning supplies, medical supplies, respirators, goggles, and more. My mental health is at an all time low. I hurt constantly and even experienced passive ideations because of how pervasive and inescapable the situation has become.

The product, in the report: LUCID 14 Inch Memory Foam Bed Mattress Conventional, Twin XL, Medium. 80”L x 39”W x 14”Th. Cover material: Bamboo. Material Gel Memory foam

I am reporting a significant widespread issue that we have unfortunately encountered firsthand. In 2019, we bought the Lucid memory foam mattress from Amazon. Recently, while spot cleaning the padded outer cover, per the legal white tags, we proceeded to unzip & remove the outer cover allowing it to fully air dry at room temperature. However, upon doing so, we inadvertently exposed the fire retardant sock, which consists of 50% fiberglass and 50% modacrylic fibers. These tiny fibers dispersed into the air without our knowledge at first, leading to an extreme contamination throughout our entire home. The situation became so dire that we were forced to vacate our home and everything in it. My family is suffering from various health issues due to the exposure to these synthetic chemical fibers, such as eye infections, lung & sinus infections, amongst other symptoms. It is crucial to highlight the risk associated with exposing the fire retardant layer and the absolute devastating consequences that follow. Moreover, there is a potential risk of the fibers permeating through the cotton cover and becoming airborne without ever removing the cover making anyone with a mattress containing this material at risk. The financial loss and damages well exceed $200,000, all stemming from a simple attempt to clean our mattress cover without prior warning. The realization that it is legally permissible in the United States to purchase a mattress without cautionary labels warning against removing the full zipper cover and exposing oneself to hazardous substances is unsettling. The probability of this occurrence affecting countless consumers is heightened due to the widespread use of this “fire retardant” material in millions of mattresses. This issue is not specific to the brand Lucid, in fact there are many brands ranging in price that contain fiberglass and other synthetic fibers posing major risk for respiratory problems to the individuals sleeping on that each night.

My husband and I have been sleeping on a Lucid 12in Memory foam mattress for over 2 years. In the last year, I’ve had throat problems, particularly in the morning and late at night. I move a lot in my sleep and sleep with my mouth open. We also noticed our dogs were increasingly itchy and constantly scratching or licking themselves and we couldn’t figure out why. Up until a few days ago, we had never removed the cover of the mattress. Then our dog had an accident on the bed so we unzipped the clearly removable cover to appropriately wash it. The fabric underneath the cover was shredded in the spots we sleep in. When we made the bed with the sheets that were washed with the cover we felt tiny scratches all over our bodies. I searched online and read the Amazon reviews for the product and saw how many other people have had problems because this company makes cheap mattresses using fiberglass without properly protecting or warning consumers. We now have to get a quote to see how much it will cost to remove the invisible fiberglass from our home and throw out all the bedding and pillows we’ve had on it, not to mention see the doctor having finally found the source of my health problems.

  4. Emergency room

Made Feb 25, 2020, sent to the company Mar 4, 2020, published by CPSC Mar 18, 2020

The product, in the report: 12” Lucid memory foam mattress Manufacturer’s part number is LU12QQ45GF

I purchased a 12 “ Lucid memory foam mattress on walmart.com. The injury happened during unpacking a compressed mattress. After I removed the first layer of plastic and rolled it out wide-wise, it was still half-folded lengthwise in another layer of plastic. I didn’t unfold the mattress before cutting the plastic because there wasn’t enough space on the floor. I thought I would remove plastic and unfold a mattress when transferring on a bed. I was staying from the folding side of the mattress with the bed frame behind me thinking of how to transfer it to ~he bed when I noticed the mattress started to expand. The next moment the mattress unfolded on its own with such a force that knocked me down hitting me in my face and I fell on the bed frame behind me and the mattress “ell on me. I barely got from under the mattress because it was very heavy. I checked my nose if it was ok. The nose was ok, but the blow in my head caused a severe C8 nerve compression, which affected the whole right arm and a hand, and I am right-handed. I will have to live with numbness, pain, weakness and poor coordination of the arm and a hand to the rest of my life. I only hope it will not get worse than it ls now. I spoke with Wal mart. They said a supplier is responsible for a product liability. The Lucid company said this didn’t happen to anyone else and they don’t believe it happened to me. I asked them to test the mattress and put a warning not to remove plastic before unfolding a mattress, and that’s what would happen if mattress gets decompressed before totally unfolded.
