The product, in the report: Product: BedTech KidsPedic 7” twin size memory foam mattress. It comes with a blue cover that zips around the mattress core. Has a CertiPUR-US designation. Link to product on BedTech’s website: https://www.bedtech.com/products/kids-pedic-waterproof-7-mattress

Product: BedTech KidsPedic 7” memory foam mattress. CertiPUR-US designation. BedTech Address: 25 S 51st Ave, Phoenix, AZ 85043

Purchased from: The Mattress Source, 2650 E Grand River Ave # D, East Lansing, MI 48823 It was sold to us as CeriPUR-US mattress that did not have any harmful chemicals or off-gassing. It was also sold to us as a mattress that had an easy to remove cover that could be machine washed.

Issue: The foam mattress core released fiberglass fibers, both large and near microscopic throughout our home. It went EVERWHERE. All over clothes being worn, clothes in closets, all over bedding, all over carpeting, all over furniture, all over walls, into our HVAC system, and worse of all, into the lungs of my wife and two sons. This all happened in the matter of hours.

My wife removed the mattress cover, which has a zipper for easy removal and cleaning. She has cleaned the cover before with no issues. My youngest son was in his bedroom with the mattress core and was laying on it and just “hanging out” at the time. He and his brother went back and forth between their rooms during this time. My wife and the boys finally realized they were covered in shiny fibers. They then discovered that these fibers were everywhere. They had been released by the foam mattress core and went into the air.

Based upon research I have done, there needs to be some form of fire retardant on or in a mattress. With the CertiPUR-US designation, certain fire retardants are not present, so fiberglass is used instead. The foam core has a mesh looking layer over it that is supposedly made of fiberglass. There also appears to be fiberglass that comes from inside the foam mattress as well. We had a HVAC cleaning company come over and look at it and they said it was not safe to be in the residence and breathing in the fiberglass particles, so I had to book my wife and kids a hotel in the meantime. The company also said this situation was way beyond what they can handle and needs to be professionally cleaned by hazardous cleaners.
