The product, in the report: Refrigerator Replacement Filter LG
As of 03/04/2017, I noticed that my LG refrigerator replacement filter Model # 5231JA2006B had failed after 2 months use and contaminated both my ice maker and in-refrigerator water line. I noticed this because I had filled a plastic clear pitcher with both water and ice a day before. Unfortunately, I had drank from that pitcher about 3 times before I noticed a fair amount beige gray particles floating in water and adhering to the sides of the container. I dumped the contaminated water and then noticed that the contaminant had coated the sides with a sticky film that would not rinse off but that needed to be scrubbed out. The particles smeared on the side as a scrubbed. Reminded me of clay. My refrigerator is 8.5 years old and I have never use the real LG filters for the entire time.I never had a filter failure before. I changed my filter every 6 months and follow the directions precisely; it should be noted that I flush longer than instructed upon inserting every new filter. This was the first one to have problem. It was purchased through Best Buy online. I have replaced it with a new filter (also same model number and purchased through Best Buy). New filter is working perfectly. Since it seemed to be a failure of the product I chose to contact first the manufacturer at 3M Purification Inc, 400 Research Parkway Meriden CT (1800-243-6894). I wanted to check directly withe the manufacturer about the safety of the filter since the filter contaminated the water and ice. [REDACTED] at 3M said they definitely make it and then ship it to Mexico but all info is “proprietary” and I would have to contact LG about all safety. I did contact LG and spoke with 3 different people [REDACTED], [REDACTED] and eventually someone named [REDACTED] at the Executive office. I have a case number [REDACTED]. I was very concerned that I had ingested something that could harm me. I just wanted safety information. No one could provide me with that information or even a list of what was in the filter or if the contaminated water could harm me. Faye did ask and noted that I had had stomach upset and GI issues after drinking the contaminated water. [REDACTED] also confirmed it was a legitimate LG produced water filter by the model number. [REDACTED] from LG Executive services not not inquire about my health and instead recommended that I contact Best Buy but she stated that she doubted they could provide me with safety information. [REDACTED] did say 3 times that “LG would not be able to assist me at this time”. She did say that she had not heard of any recalls or problems with the filter. I said several times that I was concerned for my health after drinking the concatenated water from the failed filter. [REDACTED] gave me no other options or information but to consult Best Buy. I was not provided with any safety options or information from [REDACTED] at LG Executive services. Addendum: It should be noted that I purchased the item in June of 2016, stored it correctly and did not install the filter until 01/06/2017. My method is to install a new filter than immediately purchase a filter for the next time hence the 6 month delay for installation. That way I always have a filter on hand if needed which came in handy when the filter failed on 03/04/2017.
