  1. Hurt, no treatment

Made Jan 17, 2024, sent to the company Jan 23, 2024, published by CPSC Feb 6, 2024

The product, in the report: Crane HS-1932 Demineralization Filter

Product: Crane HS-1932 demineralization filter Concern: Toxic and harmful

I pre-soaked the filter for thirty minutes and used it to replace the water tank cap according to the instructions then added purified water and turned on the humidifier as usual. Atypically, the dire consequences of this filter quickly became obvious as my [REDACTED] air purifier, upwind ten feet away, unexpectedly reacted with maximum fan speed as the app began issuing alerts about my horrifically polluted indoor air.

Attached are images showing how quickly and astonishingly the air had become toxic: within twenty minutes, the Air Quality Index (AQI) was an unimaginably extreme 256.1 with equally extraordinary Particulate Matter (PM) levels of 93 PM1, 156 PM2.5, and 180 PM10. Fortunately, the [REDACTED] air purifier quickly alerted me while I was present, awake, and could respond such that one hour after I turned the humidifier off and exhausted the polluted air the PM levels returned to zero.

If anyone has been using this filter and experiencing health problems, particularly cardiopulmonary or cancer, they should be evaluated by a doctor ASAP. Regardless of circumstance, no one should use this filter and should keep children and pets safe from exposure.

The instructions indicate that this filter can be used for thirty to forty fills but any exposure to PM is unhealthy let alone to long-term PM exposure and definitively to long-term PM exposure at such unimaginably extreme levels.

PM1: The most harmfully damaging of invisible microscopic airborne particulate matter (PM) which penetrates the lungs into the bloodstream circulating to the organs and ultimately causing severe cardiopulmonary health problems and death. These minuscule PM are most typically emitted from internal combustion engines (ICEs), power plants, and industrial facilities.

PM2.5: Harmfully damaging invisible microscopic airborne particulate matter (PM) that ultimately causes cardiopulmonary and cancerous health problems and death. Indoor PM2.5 are most typically produced by cooking (broiling, frying, sauting), burning candles or fireplace logs, and using kerosene space heaters.

PM10: A lesser health risk than PM1 or PM2.5 although no amount of exposure to any PM is safe. Generally, these more coarse PM are produced by burning fossil fuels.
