No one hurt Made Dec 31, 2022, sent to the company Jan 12, 2023, published by CPSC Jan 27, 2023
The product, in the report: Water filter and tubes/wire connecting filter from the water faucet to the back of the fridge. This filters the water being dispensed from the front of the fridge. The tube exploded and leaked water for days because Coway refused to change the filters periodically as promised. They didn’t change it for 8 years.
I have been using Coway’s services and products for over 10 years for water filtration purposes. We use two of Coway’s water filter products: one that filters water through the fridge and the other is a separate hardware that dispenses filtered water in different temperatures. This issue revolves around the first product located behind the fridge. The Coway filter is connected to the fridge through a very thin white tube which connects the Coway filter from the fridge to the water faucet behind the fridge. Coway installed this filter and connecting wires in 2015. The wire/tube of the Coway filter is where the issue occurred. This wire/tube was also provided by Coway during the initial installation. The company is responsible for switching out these tubes along with the filter every three months however Coway has not changed it ONCE. Because of this, our kitchen flooring and living room tiles were flooded and damaged by the leakage from Coway’s water filter pipe because of the long wear and tear. This could have been dangerous for our elderly parents who could have slipped and hurt themselves or if they were not at home, there could have been serious damage to the house which is all my parents have. I noticed that something was wrong a few days before I discovered the reason behind the lifted tiles in our living room. When I moved the fridge I discovered where the water leakage was coming from and it was an immense amount of water that leaked all night. Now, Coway has refused again and again to be responsible for this issue and have denied requests to have the filter and pipe changed out multiple times throughout the past 8 years. When contacted about this specific issue, Coway continues to avoid taking responsibility for our issue and had a lawyer contact us to tell us that our claim was “respectfully declined”. This is absurd because the Coway representatives who came to our house to investigate and fix the issue told us as well as other Coway users we know, that this is completely Coway’s fault because of a technical issue in their system that lost records of this specific type of filter installation and periodical replacement. They told us because of that, many households have dealt with the same leakage issue and at other homes the damages were much more severe. Coway initially refused to send emergency services to fix the leakage, denying that it was their product that caused the problem. And when two Coway representatives came to inspect the product and fix the issue, they were also in complaint because they were told not to replace these filters and they were not given proper records for these Coway technicians to know when and where they need to conduct these replacements. I have directly contacted Coway many times because I cannot speak English as a first language, in response Coway told me that an insurance company reached out to me but instead their lawyer reached out to me and refused to provide any interpretation and demanded that we explain everything in English. My daughter is helping me with completing this complaint form and we would like to take further legal action against this Korean company that refuses to take responsibility for their product malfunctions and their customer service malpractices need to be addressed. Coway’s clients are dominantly Korean and there are many other Coway users who have dealt with the same exact issue and leakage, so we do not understand why they have denied our claim without even speaking to us and with all the evidence that we gave them, there is no way Coway is not responsible for their product, the damage it cost us, and the lack of service and accountability. Instead, we were met with aggression, denial, unresponsiveness, rudeness, and a corporate lawyer. We have the right to be compensated for our home’s damages and we would like Coway to be checked before they continue to manufacture and sell their products here in America in the future.
