How badly anyone was hurt

As each report says it, in short words; CPSC’s own words are under each.

The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: mattress foam topper (polyurethane)

I purchased a Bliss memory foam mattress topper from Ollies a week and a half ago. There were no visible warnings on the box; had there been I would not have purchased the item.

When I opened the box I noticed a distinct chemical smell. There was a warning label glued to the topper which stated that it was highly flammable and did not contain flame retardant materials. It also stated that fires would be hard to contain! WHY ISN’T THIS INFORMATION VISIBLY PROCLAIMED ON THE OUTSIDE OF THE BOX?

A paper entitled “Important Consumer Information” (copy included with this complaint) states that owners not use heating pads or electric blankets while using the mattress topper-this warning should be on the outside of the box. It so also recommends that owners air out the mattress topper for 24 hours-again this is not something one should discover after opening the box.

Along with ftbromyalgia I have asthma; my asthma had been under control until using the mattress topper. The labeling on the outside of the box or inside the box does not warn users that the toxins in the mattress topper can acerbate an asthma attack. After sleeping on this topper for only two nights, I am still having breathing problems.

I am also concerned with the flammability of this product. Why isn’t this information proclaimed on the front of the box in BIG BOLD LETTERING? If this product is so flammable, could static electricity cause a fire? Furthermore, should a fire start in a home and the flames reach the polyurethane foam consider the toxins that would be emitted into the environment and the community at large. And what about the disposal of these foams?

Ollies is not the only store which sells these ‘memory foam’ mattress toppers under numerous brands. [REDACTED] sell them along with, I am sure, many other retailers. This is frightening. There is not one brand that proclaims on the front of the box the safety ramifications of their product.

Lastly, I have read that long-term use of polyurethane can cause cancer. This product should be removed from the market.

    Thank you for your consideration
