The product, in the report: KeroHeat Convection 23,500-BTU Portable Kerosene Heater From Amazon Website description Excellent emergency heat source Heats approximately a 900 square foot room 1.9 gallons of kerosene will provide 12 hours of heat Includes automatic shut-off feature
Was entertaining friends watching weekend bowl games. As it was a bit chilly I brought out Kerosene heater to help keep guests warm. When lit there was a fair amount of black smoke coming from the heater. We waited a bit thinking it would burn off as it had not been used in a while. The smoke got worse and started seeing flames shoot out the sides. At first I tried turning down the heater but nothing happened when I turned the knobs. I then attempted to shut off the heater but the cut off valve fell off when pushed down (melted). Flames got worse so moved the heater further away from guests and house. A friend grabbed fire extinguisher from house and we used on heater. Flames went out but a few seconds later came back. Then we sprayed again with fire extinguisher and same results. Finally moved further into the yard and watched as flames kept shooting out the top and sides. We waited for the fuel to run out. As Kerosene heaters can be used indoors I am seriously concerned about these heaters. I purchased the heater in November of 2014. Looking at the reviews for the heater on Amazon there are many, many complaints of the exact scenario I have outlined. One reported major damage to home from the heater burning out of control and not able to shut off.
