The product, in the report: The product is the Terraflame Hestia Bioethanol Fire Pit BioE Series, sold under the Terraflame and Solo Stove brand. It is a large, decorative, portable fire pit intended for residential use to create ambiance and warmth in indoor or outdoor spaces. The unit I own is the 30inch round model, roughly 30 inches in diameter and about 12 inches high. It is a low, circular fire feature that sits directly on the floor or on a flat surface. The body is made of heavy, molded concrete often described as stone cast or concrete with a smooth, modern finish. The color of my unit is a light neutral rather than a dark graphite finish. In the center of the circular concrete base is a recessed bioethanol burner reservoir. This is a metal insert designed to hold liquid bioethanol or similar alcohol based fuel that the user pours directly into the open container. The burner is then ignited to produce an open flame above the pooled liquid fuel. There is no chimney, no glass enclosure, and no mechanical fuel delivery system, the flame burns directly from the pooled liquid in the open burner. The product is marketed as a bioethanol fire pit or BioE Series fire feature that is ventless, requiring no gas line or chimney, and is intended to be used as a decorative fire element for patios, living spaces, and similar areas. Its purpose is to create the look and feel of a real fire for relaxation and ambiance, using liquid bioethanol fuel that the consumer pours into the burner and lights.
I am reporting the Terraflame Hestia Bioethanol Fire Pit (sold under the Solo Stove and Terraflame brand) because I discovered that its design matches the exact hazard category described in the CPSCs consumer alert for alcohol and other liquidburning fire pits.
The product is a portable fire pit that requires the user to pour liquid bioethanol (or similar alcohol based fuel) into an open metal reservoir or bowl and then ignite the pooled liquid in the same place it was poured. It is marketed for home use, both indoors and outdoors, as a decorative fire feature. I purchased this product in September 2023 and have used it personally as an adult consumer. My intended use was exactly as advertised: placing it on a stable, flat surface and using the manufacturers recommended liquid fuel for ambiance and warmth around my home/yard. I later learned from the CPSCs public safety warning that fire pits which require pouring alcohol or other liquid fuel into an open container and then igniting pooled fuel violate voluntary safety standards and present a serious flame jetting and firespreading hazard. The CPSC has stated that these products have been associated with multiple severe burn injuries and deaths. Knowing that this design is inherently prone to flame jettingwhere invisible or low flames can ignite the stream of fuel as it is poured, causing explosive jets of burning liquid to be projected toward the user or bystandersI am concerned that this product cannot be used safely as intended. I have personally experienced how difficult it can be to tell whether the flame is fully extinguished and how close hands and face must be to the burner area when refilling the reservoir. Even without an actual injury, these conditions put the user at clear risk of serious burn injury every time fuel is added, especially if any flame or hot surface remains. At this time, I have not suffered a physical injury, but I believe injuries are likely to occur or could easily occur with normal use due to the products design. The risk is that a user, following typical instructions, refills the fire pit when the flame appears low or out, while vapors or a small flame remain, resulting in a sudden burst (flame jetting) that throws burning liquid onto the users hands, arms, face, or body, or onto nearby people and combustible materials. I contacted the company (Solo Stove / Terraflame) to request a refund or remedy after learning of the CPSC alert. They confirmed there is no recall and refused to offer any remedy, instructing me only that they do not have a refund program tied to the CPSC alert. Because the CPSC has warned consumers to stop using and dispose of all such liquidburning fire pits, I am now discontinuing use and reporting this product so the Commission has a record that: -The design appears to match the hazardous category identified in the alert. -The product was sold for home use and used as intended. -The manufacturer/distributor is declining to offer any remedy even though the product cannot safely be used as advertised. I am submitting this report in the interest of preventing severe injuries and to help inform any future safety actions regarding this specific product line.
