The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Target Brand 32” Threshold Fire Column Fire Bowl Store Item Number: 009-07-0769 Retailing at $129.99

We recently purchased from our local Austin, TX Lakeline Target store a pre-assembled, floor model of a 32” Threshold Fire Column in the Garden section, retailing at $129.99. It is Store Item Number (DPCI) 009-07-0769 and Online Number: 16538881.

It came pre-assembled as a demo model and we googled and found the instructions online before using it. Before using I even checked the Target website that had the following two comments pasted below.

    http://www.target.com/p/threshold-fire-column/-/A-16538881?lnk=rec|pdp|viewed_viewed|pdpv1

I read the user’s comments/warning about holding the ignition before starting the gas, this didn’t seem to help. The directions didn’t seem to indicate this, either. After about two seconds of holding down the ignition we had a large fireball that came out of the fire column and ended up with non-serious burns on my fingers. I’ve operated gas grills for years and haven’t ever seen anything like this. It is a very dangerous product and I did contact the Retailer to express my concern of an unsafe product.

To date, I have not received a response from Target, though I contacted them on Sunday, July 12.

I’m wondering if Target has had other complaints about this product in addition to the comments on their website. I believe it merits further investigation.

The product, in the report: Target Home Collection - Fire Bowl Style- Pagoda Online Item #: 13831172 Store Item Number (DPCI): 009-07-0254 Features: Outdoor Use Only Includes: Wood Grate, Cover, Removable Mesh Sides Power Source: Wood Burning Frame Material: Steel Metal Finish: Steel Finish: Powder-Coated Hardware Material: Galvanized Steel Protective Qualities: Weather Resistant Heat Coverage: 10’ Radius Safety and Security Features: Screen Dimensions: 23.6 “ H x 23.6 “ W x 23.6 “ D Weight: 16.5 Lb.

We received the Target Home Collection fire pit/bowl style named Pagoda as a wedding gift in July 2011. Within a year, and one use, the bottom is very rusted, mainly where the flames were in the one use.

Other concerns that we have with this product include: when the wind blows (strong wind or not) the top flies off the structure. The last gust of wind that we had, the top (which is square) stuck in our wood privacy fence before falling to the ground. The mesh sides fall easily as well.

We used the fire pit for the first time in March 2012. We only had the fire going for 30 minutes or less. I think we burned 3 sticks of wood from the rick we purchased. Tonight (7/15/2012) when we moved the fire pit to clean our deck, we noticed that the boards under the fire pit were charred.

This product seriously needs to be reviewed and potentially removed from the market as these issues can destroy property or a life.
