The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

  1. Emergency room

Made Sep 2, 2011, published by CPSC Sep 29, 2011

The product, in the report: Ceramic Pot and Fuel Gel. The product label identifies the pot as “Summer Smart Living Glazed Deco Flame Pot,” and the gel as “Summer Smart Living Firepot Fuel Gel” Both the Flame Pot and the Fuel Gel are distributed by American Sales Co., which we understand is a subsidiary of Ahold USA, Inc. We believe that the gel may have been manufactured by Bird Brain, Inc., and perhaps the ceramic pot was also manufactured by Bird Brain.

We represent [REDACTED], a 23-year old male. On June 29, 2011, [REDACTED] was injured with serious burns after the fuel receptacle exploded out of its ceramic pot.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS IS NOT A SITUATION WHERE GEL WAS ADDED TO AN ALREADY BURNING POT.

[REDACTED] and his family had not lit the gel fuel pot that day. Within about 5 minutes after the fuel pot had been lit (and without warning), a loud “pop” came from the pot and the fuel reservoir exploded into the air and onto the table. When it landed, the flaming gel spilled along the table towards [REDACTED], and his arm became engulfed in flames. We believe that the explosion was caused by the concentrated heat in the ceramic pot, which has no holes to circulate air.

The product label identifies the pot as “Summer Smart Living Glazed Deco Flame Pot,” and along with the Summer Smart Living Firepot Fuel Gel, was purchased at Giant - Store #0387, Rt 1 & 270, Lighthouse Plaza, in Rehoboth Beach, Delaware. Both the Flame Pot and the Fuel Gel are distributed by American Sales Co., which we understand is a subsidiary of Ahold USA, Inc. We believe that the gel may have been manufactured by Bird Brain, Inc., and perhaps the ceramic pot was also manufactured by Bird Brain.
