The product, in the report: Outdoor Patio Heater (gas)
In early December, 2012, I purchased an outdoor patio heater from Costco online. The product is Costco Item # 514537. The heater is manufactured by Fire Sense Model # 60688. The product requires some assembly. I believe the product has a serious design flaw that could result in a fire hazard. The unit was designed so that the purchaser does not have the ability to test the upper hose (where it connects to the igniter and on/off switch for gas leaks. The owner’s manual diagram shows that the hose is accessible through a hole in the housing and should be tested for leaks. The actual design is such that there is no testing hole and the entire unit must be dissembled, placed on the ground and tested and then reassembled. This is not practical. The part of the unit where the hose connects comes already assembled and is very difficult to take apart. I did in fact experience a gas leak but was fortunate enough to detect it before I experienced a fire or explosion. I attempted to post a review of the product on the Costco web site describing my issue but Costco chose not to post it. I returned the product to Costco without a problem. I called the manufacturer customer service line. They told me that they would have to replace the entire burner/valve portion of the heater but that they did not have any in stock and wouldn’t for over a month as other customers have experienced similar issues. I expect that most customers who purchase this product will not test the hose coupling for leaks as it is not accessible and they will not take the time to disassemble the unit.
