  1. No incident, no one hurt

Made Jan 2, 2023, sent to the company Feb 15, 2023, published by CPSC Mar 2, 2023

The product, in the report: HVAC unit / AC and heat

This is regarding a Goodman split HVAC unit that caught on fire, which was only resolved by turning off the circuit breaker to the unit. Details of product: Goodman Model: CHPF1824A6 Model Desc: 1824 HORIZONTAL BUTT UP Manufacture Date: 12/01/2017 Serial Number: 1711577748

For two years, we have two of these units in my home. On 12/30 overnight, one unit ran overnight at full power and would not shut off, even when I turned off the [REDACTED] thermostat (which was set to 72-73, and the temp detected was 82). It turned off when I flipped the circuit breaker, however the circuit breaker would not turn back on. HVAC repairperson came same day and smelled that there was a fire inside the HVAC unit furnace. It melted a pipe, some wires, and also melted the safety sticker on the inside of the cover. Thankfully we were at home to shut it off. My electrician wrote, “no safety mechanism worked or worked at the very critical point. There are at least 2-3 heat cut/kill switches on Board which really maxed out before that burning occurred. Terrible terrible. Critical infra failure of the worst kind and kind and yet something at a very last point functioned and blocked the whole thing, you turned off the breaker.”

The product, in the report: Central heat/air conditioner. 3 TON PKG GAS 15 SEER 90K

An apparent small fire started in my outside heat/air conditioning unit that resulted in filling my house with acrid smoke and triggering smoke alarms and the circuit breaker. The repair man found that the electrical wire connecting the circulation fan to the main circuit shorted when a bare spot in the wire made contact with the metal fan support. He said it was probably the vibration of the motor over time caused the sharp edged sheet metal to cut through the insulation. The result was significant burning of wires and plastic in the motor housing.
