No one hurt Made Dec 2, 2016, sent to the company Dec 12, 2016, published by CPSC Dec 27, 2016
The product, in the report: The product is a ventless gas heater. The company name that manufactured it is Superior. They manufactured it for Innovative Hearth Products, 1508 Elm Hill Pike, Suite 108, Nashville, TN 37210. The serial number is GCB30DT(B).
We had a ventless gas heater that we had bought last year. We used it all last winter and this year had only used it about a week when the incident happened. When my son’s girlfriend came home our basement was filled with smoke and she went over to the heater and turned the main gas line off. We are not sure what happened with it but it is like it exploded inside. It was all burnt on the top and back of heater and caught the wall on fire. The company sent their rep to look at the heater last week but he didn’t even really examine it nor did he even attempt to look at the inside of the heater. He just give us some b.s. that it was installation error. lt can be used for either propane or gas. There was a setting on the back and it was set to natural gas like it should have been. He then looked on the bottom where the fixtures for the lp and gas were. Since there wasn’t anything in the propane fixture he said that the flame could get down in there and come out that hole. Well after he left we remembered from our pictures that there was something blue among some debris that was laying on the floor underneath the heater after it happened. We didn’t realize what it was but my husband figured out that it was the fixture that was in the propane hole and it blew out when the explosion happened. I believe there should be a safety feature anyway so the gas wouldn’t even go there if it is set to natural gas setting. We could have lost our whole house because of this heater. We even sleep down there where this heater is. I just want other unsuspecting families to be aware of the dangers of this heater. Luckily everyone was at work and school when this happened.
