The product, in the report: Freestanding Outdoor Stainless Steel Patio Heater - Gas Fired Infrared, Propane, 40,000BTU, 88” tall. http://www.acefactorystore.com/proddetail.asp?prod=4304309&cat=192

Having a party by the pool and in the late afternoon it was getting cool. I lit the patio heater, using the knob (which creates a spark to ignite the pilot light). It lit on the fourth or fifth try and then I turned the knob further to the low position. Once the burner was lit, I turned it further to high, which was fully CCW. I closed the lid covering the knob. Many of the women at the party gathered around and started talking (four or five) and this went on for about 30 minutes. As they were standing there, the lower portion of the patio heater (where the propane tank is stored) exploded. Flames shot out the lower vent holes at the very bottom of the unit and everyone jumped. I ran over to the unit (I was about 15 feet away, facing the unit) and saw the propane cylinder was on fire, but still enclosed in the lower cylinder cover. I first tried to open the burner valve cover to access the knob and shut off the upper flame. The fire was shooting out of the grid and burning the entire upper section. My finger burned as soon as I touched the cover, so I could not access the valve. My attention turned to the burning propane cylinder. I told everyone to get away, far away. I blew hard through the hand-hole of the cylinder cover and was able to extinguish the flame. I then opened the cylinder cover, which burned my hand further. I then turned off the gas valve on top of the propane cylinder, burning all five fingers on my right hand (through my shirt I was using to protect my hand). There was molten metal on the regulator that must have dripped down from the inside of the upper burner area. I have no idea what melted. Someone handed me a bottle of water, and I used it to extinguish the upper flame, that was still burning without propane feeding it. An hour or so later, I opened the door to the knob in the upper burner area and it was melted beyond recognition. The patio heater is still sitting exactly as it was during the fire.
