The product, in the report: Jotul GF 200 DV II #351627 Direct vent gas stove. propane service. Dark color.

We purchased a jotul GF 200 DV II #351627 direct vent gas stove in Oct 2020. On or about Oct 2022 we began to notice change in operation of the stove, difficulty in lighting and my wife began to complain of a smell. In January 2023 we scheduled a visit from our HVAC service company and it was determined that the stoves valve that controls the flow of propone had failed causing direct flow of propane into our home.

The product, in the report: LP Heating stove

Our Jotul Sebago DV 400 (serial number 031793) started leaking gas on 1/28/2016 so we shut it off and called our dealer Woodburning Warehouse in Watervliet NY. They weren’t able to come until 2/4/2016 so the stove remained off. When the repairman came he spent several hours trying to find the leak and finally said it has to be the gas valve as everything else checked out ok. I asked him how often the valves failed and he said rarely. He has worked 28 years repairing stove and has only replaced 3 or 4 in all that time and never in one as new as this (14 months old). Something failed internally in this valve. I talked again to the shop next day about this and they informed me they just had a call from another customer had had called about their Sebago 400 DV leaking gas. It appears to me they may have have batch stoves with bad valves that are are prone to failure after a short time. This problem obviously can lead to catastrophic and fatal consequences if not addressed by the manufacturer.

The product, in the report: Gas heating stove, freestanding

We purchased a new Jotul free-standing gas heat stove to replace a wood stove. It was finally up and running with a new gas line on December 1. We had it set on a thermostat to keep the basement room at a steady temperature. Upon returning from an errand on Dec 3, we entered the room to find the flame considerably larger than it was set, and there was a sound like a blow torch coming from the stove. It was quite alarming. My husband set the flame level back, but that did not correct the blow torch sound. We turned it off, turned it back on and it was okay. This has happened four times now since Dec 3. Today is December 19, and it happened this morning. We no longer leave the stove set on a thermostat unless we are in the room. I did a search online and found a forum where others with Jotul stoves were discussing this issue, and one of them had contacted Jotul and spoken with an engineer. The first post on this forum was 2005. Several comments were posted about this issue, in 2007, 2010, and the latest in 2011. The findings were that the engineers confirmed there is a problem with the burner, and that there could be some damage to the stove from repeated blow torch effects. So, we shared this with our dealer, who called Jotul and had it confirmed with them by telephone. A new burner is on order and will be installed as soon as the part comes in. We are sharing this issue because we see this as at least a costly problem with the stove over time, and possibly a potential fire hazard. It is alarming to us that this issue was first mentioned in the forum 9 years ago, and that it has been ongoing, and yet our dealer had never been provided information about this. We believe this is worth some investigation by some organization. If that is not you, please advise so we can pursue this.
