The product, in the report: Dornback ceiling mounted unit heater model DGH-45
In the beginning of the year I installed a gas fired Dornback ceiling mounted unit heater model DGH-45 made by Adams Manufacturing Company in the garage. Shortly after the installation I contacted the manufacturer about a hot metal smell the was causing some irritation to my wind pipe tissue. After investigating I found a section of the heat exchanger coating was changing in appearance and I emailed photos of it to the manufacturer and talked to them.
After the summer when I ran the heater again I found the smell had increased in level and would cause me to get a headache after the unit runs for a while. After I left the space the headache went away. If the metal coating is burning off the heat exchanger headaches can be a symptom of metals sickness. The area of the heat exchanger is now all black with another area changing in appearance. I sent current photos of the heat exchanger to the manufacturer and talked to them again. Photos attached.
I had an HVAC company check out the unit and a carbon monoxide detector reads zero.
The manufacturer has yet to provide any solution to the problem.
