  1. No one hurt

Made Aug 8, 2026, sent to the company Aug 31, 2026, published by CPSC Sep 15, 2026

The product, in the report: The product is a Bromic Platinum 500 Series 39,800 BTU Mounted Outdoor Gas Heater.

I have 2 Bromic Platinum 500 Series, 39,800 BTU Mounted Outdoor Gas Heaters on my screened porch. Earlier this summer, one of the heaters caught on fire. The Fire Department came to our house. Fortunately, we were able to put the fire out with minimal damage because we were in the room when the fire started and we were able to act very quickly to stop the fire. If we had not been in the room, my entire house could have gone up in flames because there was a hole in the RUBBER gas tube inside the heating unit which had a hole burned in it - and the open gas line was feeding a fire shooting flames out of the back of the unit. If not caught immediately, the fire could have been even worse because the product uses an electrical switch to start - and the electric line was very close to the open fire (which could have also ignited an electrical fire).

Fortunately, we were in the room and quickly put our the fire, so there we no injuries.

A few weeks after the fire, we had the original gas professional installer take a look at both the product that started the fire as well as the other Bromic gas heater in the room. The installer said that the second heater was also damaged and would have soon also caught on fire. Clearly the heater is defective and if not remediated could burn down someone’s home.

The product, in the report: Ceiling-mounted Bromic outdoor natural gas radiant patio heater with a tempered glass front panel. The heater is permanently mounted to the ceiling of a covered residential outdoor deck and is designed to provide radiant heat to the outdoor seating areas. The glass panel is secured to the front of the heater by metal retaining brackets.

A ceiling-mounted Bromic outdoor gas heater experienced a failure in which the front glass panel detached from the unit during normal use and fell into an occupied outdoor seating area. The hot glass panel came within inches of striking my 5-week-old infant, struck another adult, damaged an outdoor coffee table, melted an outdoor rug, and melted a composite deck. Fortunately, no serious injuries occurred, but the incident presented significant risk of severe burns or other serious injury due to the weight and temperature of the falling glass. The heater was professionally installed. Following the incident, Bromic replaced the glass panel but declined reimbursement for the resulting property damage, stating the cause could not be determined.
