The reports, as CPSC published them

Reports people made to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission. CPSC publishes each one after sending it to the company named, and doesn’t guarantee they’re accurate. A report isn’t a recall.

Each report is the words of the person who made it, as CPSC published them. The company’s comments, where CPSC published any, are set apart as the company’s own.

The product, in the report: Mr Heater Portable Buddy Model MH9BX. Red. Stock number F232054. EC-32054-2204817632

I set up my Mr Heater Portable Buddy Heater with the included 5ft hose, filter, and a fresh propane tank. Approximately three hours later I repositioned in my garage. Moving it triggered the safety shutdown. I restarted the device, and ensured it was working properly. I went inside approximately 20 minutes later to grab something, and the device was still functioning correctly. When I came back out to my garage, 10 minutes later, the heater was on fire and hose had melted, shooting flames out of the tip. I used a fire extinguisher to put out the blaze. No one was injured. The fire appears to have originated near where the hose attaches to the heater. Of the 5ft hose, almost 4 ft remained, and the heater was badly burned.

The product, in the report: The product is a Mr. heater, ventless liquid, propane, fueled wall or floor heater

I had a vent free wall mount Mr. heater that was fueled by liquid propane. I had used the unit in my home for about one year so it was relatively new. On Tuesday evening, April 9 around 8 PM. I heard a loud noise in the kitchen, and when I got to the kitchen, flames were shooting up the wall and across the ceiling. The relief valve on the unit was somehow compromised and the flame and gas was spewing up the wall. I immediately turned the gas off at the floor and the fire went out. There was only about five seconds that transpire between when I heard the noise and when I turned the gas off. If I had not been in my home, or if I had been asleep , the damages wouldve been much much worse. I would strongly recommend not using any Mr. heater products. I I believe the house wouldve caught fire within a few more seconds of that heater exploding.

The product, in the report: The product is a propane tank-mounted heater that secures to the top of the propane cylinder. It is a chrome-plated heater shield with a propane-fired element inside the shroud. The heater secures to the tank and then the valve is connected to the cylinder valve.

Users were utilizing a propane tank top heater to heat their area outside while working on a car. While running the heater, flames started coming out of the tank connection. They used snow to put the fire out and then called the fire department.

The product, in the report: Mr Heater 30,000 BTU propane heater

propane heater keeps flickering on on off. I originally purchased the heater for my 82 year old sister. She would not use it because it made noises, although when I checked it, it seemed normal. It was not until I installed it in my basement last month that had saw what she had been talking about. I can set on the number and it work fine a couple of times then a low flame will flicker on and off after the thermostat cuts it off. I don’t know if propane will leak through the valve or not if the pilot light were to go off. The heater has been used very little Since I purchased it in 2020, my sister wouldn’t use it nor will I unless I’m watching it. The thermostat positions doesn’t have a good indent to let you know that it is exactly on the number.

The product, in the report: Mr. Heater Vent Free 30,000 BTU Radiant Propane Heater (bundle with fan blower). Amazon product information (where we purchased the heater) shows ASIN B0BFBX1J3J. There is no model number information on the outside of the heater. If necessary, I can take it apart and look inside, but only if you truly need. There is a sticker on the bottom of the heater with a bar code and the numbers “EC-99830-2201890611.” I believe this may break down as model EC-99830 and serial number 2201890611.

We purchased a Mr. Heater Vent Free 30,000 BTU Radiant Propane Heater (bundle with fan blower) in November 2022. Twice it has had a propane buildup which cause a flare-up where it basically went “whoomph” and blew a ball of flame 2 to 3 feet out of the front of the unit. This only occurred when the thermostat was set to under their 2 setting (settings range from 1 to 5). This is used in our living room as a secondary heat source. Also note that in our correspondence with Enerco Group (the manufacturer), they state the cause was setting the thermostat to settings that were not whole numbers (i.e. setting the thermostat exactly on 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5). Nothing in the owners or operators manual indicates the thermostat must only be set on whole numbers. In our correspondence, Enerco states that even though they know this dangerous flare-up problem can be caused when the thermostat is not left exactly on a whole number setting, they have no plans to replace the thermostat with one that simply clicks into place on the whole numbers. Enerco states they are changing their owners manual to indicate the thermostat should be set on whole numbers only, but, again, they are still going to leave the thermostat that allows unsafe settings. This should be a simple hardware fix - replace the thermostat with one that does not cause an explosion of flame. Enerco refuses. No one was injured during the times this occurred, but the possibility is very high if someone had been in the wrong place at the wrong time. I will attach copies of all email correspondence with Enerco representatives, both their emails and mine.

Caller is reporting that the filter on the propane portable heater exploded causing the seam to break in half leaving a gap so that gas fumes escaped in the air. He stated that if the product was in use, it would have caused property damages, injuries and maybe fatalities. He stated that he purchased the filter about a month ago and installed it on 11/20 for the first time. He stated that the instruction recommends using the filter, but it failed.

Caller stated that he did not contact the manufacturer as yet.

Caller feels that this heater filter is a safety hazard and should be reported.

I purchased a Mr. Heater Little Buddy Model MH4B on 12/02/12. Bar code on tag EC-15100-12023125. I only expected to use it during hunting season. I have only started it once before when I bought it new. My 2nd time to use was outdoor in 10 degree F. temp. The unit burst into flames. I had to unscrew the propane tank to extinguish the fire or risk starting a brush fire if I threw it away from myself. I know for a fact the tank was securely fastened before lighting. Is this problem similar to the recall on the Big Buddy? Its not safe to use as is. Also note: at the time in 2012 I purchased a 1st little Buddy that I had to return because it would not light. This was the replacement for the 1st defective Little Buddy.

The product, in the report: Propane space Heater Vent free heater

This consumer and her son each purchased a propane use space heater in December 2016 from in Gallipolis, Ohio. She never set her heater up, however her son did sent his up in the garage under his apartment set on the 21’ x 21’ concrete floor in the middle of the floor. The heater was hooked to a 5 ft propane supply via copper tubing and had already used two tanks of the propane but during the third tank and the heater running approximately one week the caller’s son came home to see that the heater was burned and had approximately 6 to 8 inch flames coming from the bottom of the heater. He ran and turned the propane supply off which extinguished the flames. The caller is reporting this as a severe fire and burn hazard due to the fact that if he had not come home when he did then the flames could have become much hotter, their three vehicles in that garage could have exploded and the house could have caught fire. There are no injuries to report The caller and her son took both the heaters back to the seller and received refunds for both heaters. The seller contacted the manufacturer but has at this time not heard back from them.
