The product, in the report: Honeywell VR8205M2872 Gas Control Valve. It has a manufacturer defect where it doesn’t completely shut the valve in some circumstances, resulting in natural gas entering living space. After replacing the control valve with a new one, I took apart the defective unit and found what I believe to be the issue, a flaw in the surface of a sealing disc. The first picture shows the sealing valve plunger (operated by a solenoid), and the 2nd picture shows the flaw where the surface is not honed flat, disallowing a perfect seal. I have the parts if Honeywell wants them. There is apparently no way to report this directly to Honeywell.
[REDACTED] 50k BTU unit heater installed ~12/21. Noticed gas smell, diagnosed with help licensed plumber. Determined issue was Honeywell gas control valve defective, let gas leak into garage. Replaced valve unit. Took pictures showing what is believed to be the product defect.
