No one hurt Made Apr 4, 2025, sent to the company Apr 9, 2025, published by CPSC Apr 23, 2025
The product, in the report: White Mainstays brand PTC Fan-Forced Heater 16621667, MODEL: WSH10C2AWW, ETL listed, conforms to UL STD. 1278, Made in China. Also marked Intertek 3068797. For product questions call customer service at 1-866-321-9509. It is a white space heater with fan and ceramic / metal heating element, safety tip-over switch, approx. 4” x 6” x 8” in size
My son was using the space heater in his room. The space heater is a Mainstays brand “PTC Fan-Forced Heater”, date code 2106, purchased at Wal-mart. It is a few years old. After turning it on, he reported sparking and smoke coming from the appliance. I checked, and it appears the cord developed a break and began to arc. Since the cord lies flat against the carpet, it left a scorch mark on the floor where the cable had broken.
The product was being used “normally”, placed on the floor a safe distance from flammable objects etc. No injuries occurred, but the carpet was scorched, and I believe this could be a fire hazard.
I have looked at the point where the cable broke: it is attached to the device but passes through a plastic groove (channel) in the housing of the heater. There are plastic nubs which are likely intended to hold the cable in place at that point. However, I believe after normal use / transport of the appliance, over time the nubs become a stress point on the cable, eventually leading to the internal wiring breaking. It seems to have improper strain relief at this point.
