The product, in the report: Ecowell Model EHT150 Electric Circulating Fan Heater, White, 1500W, date code 202208
I was using an Ecowell ETH150 space heater on a bare concrete floor when I accidentally bumped it. I’d probably done this a few times before, but the final time I heard an electrical arcing noise and smelled burning plastic. I unplugged the heater. I was curious what had happened so I opened it to inspect it and found that the tip-over safety switch had completely melted and the leads had melted into the plastic plate the switch was mounted on.
I believe the problem was that instead of tipping over completely, the heater (being rather top-heavy) rocked back and forth, opening and closing the switch. It’s also possible that the base of the heater might have landed on the heater’s own cord and left the switch only partly open. In any case, it looks like there was arcing in the contacts that led to a high-resistance connection.
